10 Questions With Panthers Receiver/Returner Philly Brown

[vc_row_inner no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”]141005 Panthers v Bears_0135In what may be a franchise first, the Panthers on Monday will play a team from a city that shares the same name as one of its players. But rookie wideout/returner Philly Brown doesn’t like his nickname. His given name is Corey, which few have used since he was a freshman in college. When Brown, who grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Upper Darby, arrived at Ohio State, there was another Corey Brown on the roster. So former Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel started calling him “Philly.” The other Corey Brown, who was from outside Pittsburgh, was nicknamed — you guessed it — “Pittsburgh.”Ahead of his homecoming, here are 10 questions with Philly/Corey:

1. What’s it like getting ready to face your hometown team?

“It’s weird playing against the team you’ve been rooting for all your life. But it’s the opponent at the end of the day, so we’re just going out there and get the win.”

2. Which Eagles did you root for while growing up?

“I was a running back back in the day, so I was always a Brian Westbrook fan. I liked Terrell Owens when he was there for that one year. And obviously a Donovan McNabb fan. But there’s still dudes on the team that I was cheering for in high school, even (current Panthers receiver) Jason (Avant). Jason was one of my favorite players.”

3. What do you remember about Avant’s time with the Eagles?

“Reliable. He always made those catches for us that we needed.”

4. You still say ‘us’ when talking about the Eagles?

“When you’ve been rooting for a team for 21 years of your life, it just becomes so natural when you talk about them. I root for them when we’re not playing them, but this week I hope we kill them.”

5. How relieved are you to be back on the field after missing two games with a concussion?

“It’s a game I’ve obviously had circled on the schedule. Just to be able to be cleared and be back on the field, it’s terrible sitting in a dark room all day long. It’s not as bad as you think it is until you actually have to do it, so to be able to be back out there, especially for a game of this magnitude is good.”

6. You’ve never embraced your nickname. Do you still not like to be called Philly?

“No.”

7. Then why don’t you have people call you Corey?

“They won’t do it. As long as my name’s up there (above locker), I’m fine with whatever it says.”

8. Did you ever try to get people to stop calling you Philly?

“In college, but it didn’t work. They said it in the stadium, just like they do here.”

9. Does anyone call you Corey?

“My mom calls me Corey.”

10. No one else?

“If I have a lady friend — I don’t have one — but if I did, I would want her to call me Corey.”
