10-Year-Old Cam Newton Critic Explains His Opinion

Maxine Baskfield-Spears, a teacher at Charlottesville’s Venable Elementary School, was eating lunch Tuesday when she started skimming the New York Daily News. That’s when she first realized a piece written by one of her students had gone viral.”I nearly choked on my sandwich. I couldn’t believe that it made national news,” Baskfield-Spears said over the phone Tuesday afternoon. The article, a critical view of Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton written for the school newspaper, quickly caught fire after it was posted to Twitter Monday night. By Tuesday morning, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, CBS Sports, Fox Sports and Deadspin had all picked up on the ‘hot take.’[vc_row_inner no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″]“We’re all somewhat surprised that an article in a small student newspaper would garner this much attention,” Baskfield-Spears said. She’s one of the adult supervisors of The Venable Gazelle, a quarterly newspaper “written for students, by students.” Robert Romer is the editor. He’s also the ‘sports reporter’ who wrote the piece on Newton. The 10 year old wasn’t aware of the commotion he had caused online until teachers told him five minutes before he chatted with BBR, the first of at least three interviews he was expected to do Tuesday. He was supposed to be in phys ed. Instead, the 4th grader wasn’t backing down from his stance.[vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html]“I am very surprised and very glad because it means the Panthers might get a new quarterback,” Robert said, when asked what it was like to have so many read his opinion.Despite growing up in Charlottesville, Robert never attached himself to the Redskins. His parents don’t follow football, but his best friend has family in North Carolina. They’re now both Panthers fans. And the name of that best friend — Peyton — may help explain why Robert expects more from Newton.”Cam isn’t reliable like Peyton Manning is. Some days he’ll win, some days he’ll lose,” Robert says. But Manning loses a lot in the playoffs, no?”Well, he’s old.”Fair enough.Like he did at the end of his at the end of his article, Robert admitted that when the Panthers lose “it may not all be Cam’s fault.” As far as his complaint that the back-to-back NFC South champs “never seem to win,” Robert explained: “What bugs me is they’ve gone to the Super Bowl once but lost.”[vc_row_inner no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″]Still, that’s one more than the Browns, Lions, Texans and Jaguars. Not surprisingly, some adults don’t see all this as an endearing and harmless 24-hour story during one of the relatively slow times on the NFL calendar. The more it’s spread, the more negative reaction it’s received, albeit from a small fraction of fans.“I would be very, very disappointed in mankind if there would be backlash, that people would be critical of a child having an opinion,” Baskfield-Spears said. “We should be encouraging young people to learn, to express their ideas in the right forum, and in such a way that it can be even debated a little it.”[vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html]”This is sort of the beginning. I hope by the time he’s in 8th or 9th grade, he’ll be writing articles he can defend and that other people can intellectually question.”Because Newton has taken more than a fair amount of criticism over the years, it’s understandable why some fans are sensitive. But it’s best to remember we’re talking about a 10 year old who wrote something that made many smile. Really, he’s just a kid who wants the Panthers win.”I think Cam throws too many interceptions,” Robert says. “But I’ll cheer for him because he’s on my favorite football team.”

  1. It’s a shame that the poor kid is getting hate from random strangers, but by 10 years old he should know Newton is one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL and an elite athlete.

      1. The kid was bullying Cam and I wasn’t standing for it…. and I stop living with my mom last year, thank you very much Mr.Smartypants….

  3. Why are people so critical of a young player? Cam was brought to this team to change the mindset of complacency with losing. When you place a young player in that type of environment, there will be some rough patches.
Also the QB will never be able to perform at full potential when the OL can’t perform at a good level.

  5. i don’t think to many are really worried about it the kid likely is a good kid but doesn’t know much about the panthers & is prefers a pocket passer

  7. I think it’s just getting annoying that every single news outlet is picking this up and running with it and then telling everyone to stop getting mad. Like, be a journalist, put out a real story. Stop scouring elementary school newspapers looking for your next big story. We all know it dosen’t matter, so why run it? You don’t have to go interview the kid to explain himself, he’s 10, there’s the explanation. And the stories all end with, “maybe the kid is onto something” like ok, so now it’s not just a harmless kid story, now it’s a cover for your feelings as a writer that you would get blasted for if you said it yourself. I expect more from you Voth.

    1. Hey Zac, appreciate the feedback. I’m not going to pretend this was the pinnacle of journalism, and I completely understand an argument for not giving this more attention. But it was a story about the most popular player on the Panthers that was on pretty much every sports website nationwide. I certainly could have ignored it, but I opted to find out a little bit more about the kid. I had a whole bunch of folks telling me he must have just heard stuff like that from his parents, when it turns out, it’s mostly because his friend has the same first name as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. And he’s 10. My confirmation name was Xavier. It had nothing to do with the saint. It’s cause I thought Xavier McDaniel had a cool name. For some reason, this story struck a cord with people. For many – including me – I thought it was endearing how he seemed to think it through and then came up with a broader thought at the end. Amazingly, by then, the kid actually sounded a lot smarter than many adults who put everything on Cam’s shoulders. But again, I also see an argument that this is a silly story to begin with. It was a 24-thing story in early spring. Nothing more, perhaps maybe less.

  9. it’s not about wins, kid. cam newton is a face of the NFL and has brought an insane amount of interest and $ to the panthers.

hopefully his parents give him up for adoption now.

  11. This is highly debatable. If you tried to list 15 QB’s which are better, at least 5 of them would be very questionable. Take any of that 15 and put them on the Panthers and opinions would change drastically. Cam has his flaws, but the team hasn’t exactly surrounded him with offensive weapons or a dependable offensive line. The best QB’s in the league would have failed on a monumental level behind the lines Newton has had to work with.

    1. What was the Panthers record before Cam came. What quarterback has won back 2 back NFC South championships?.. it ain’t Drew Brees.

      1. Idk what the boy’s problem is because Cam is the Panthers. They would be back to 2-14 without him. However, Drew Brees is a HOF qb who is even greater. Let’s leave Brees out of this. Matt Ryan or Mike Glennon should be the replacement for that.

          1. Is Drew Brees the only QB in the NFC South with a Super Bowl ring or not? Plus the Panthers had a losing record anyways

          2. Nobody’s saying Drew Brees is a bad Quarterback, he’s elite. I’m pointing out Cam’s accomplishments. The guy has played with a surgically repaired ankle, a broken rib, and a back broken in a horrific car accident, and led this team to their first playoff win in a decade. He led his team to victory in a fantastic Monday Night Game against the Patty Cakes and Captain America Tom Brady. All I’m saying is stop making out like Cam is Geno Smith and recognize that he’s a top 10 QB in this league.

          3. If you read my first message you’ll see that I was praising Cam Newton. I stated that he IS the Panthers. He’s the best player on the team by far. I’m just saying that we should leave Brees out of the discussion since everyone is already enlightened with his accomplishments

    2. Brady
      Luck
      Peyton
      Rodgers
      Brees
      Ryan
      Flacco
      Romo
      Rivers
      Roethlisberger
      Palmer
      Wilson
      All no question better
Some would argue but Carr, Alex Smith, Tannehill, Bridgewater, Stafford, Foles, Eli, Bradford, are all better. Also most will disagree but Fitzpatrick is better

      1. Matt Ryan – the guy who threw 2 interceptions for TDs the last game of the year with the division on the line. And look who he is throwing to. No thanks.

        Palmer…really? That’s laughable.

        1. One game Ryan had off, the Panthers still finished 7-9, only won a playoff game because Ryan Lindley played for Arizona and he is quite possibly he worst QB in the league. Palmer was leading the Cardinals through a great season(I know they had a good defense). But look what happened when he got hurt…

      2. Romo? Luck is an interception machine who can’t win the big game. Bridgewater…please. Cam broke Peyton ‘ s rookie record. Tannehill will never go to the playoffs. Fitzpatrick never won a division title. Stafford went to Georgia. Bradford has yet to throw 50 passes in a season. Foles was was traded for someone whose yet to throw 50 passes in a season. Derek Carr… ok you got one (they don’t call me silver and black zac for nothing). Palmer… over the hill. Alex Smith, was replaced by Cam lite in San Francisco. Ryan… no. Roethlisberger has done nothing this decade. Brady, Rogers, Wilson, Brees right now all better because they have SuperBowls in the last 7 years.

        1. Luck also is one of the best in the game, do you remember his comeback against KC. He hasn’t won a Super Bowl yet, but what big game has Cam won? You can’t even compare Peyton to Newton, it’s a different game nowadays people are going to throw for more yards(BTW Luck beat Newton’s record). Palmer was leading the Cards to an amazing year(yes I know the defense is good). But when he got hurt, everything went downhill. If Bradford is healthy he can be great. Foles has shown great potential. Roethlisberger has done more the past decade than Cam. Alex Smith got replaced because he was hurt and they went with the hot hand, who is an awful QB. I am not a fan of Stafford but he has proven to be a decent QB, personally I think better than Cam. Fitz is just a guy I like, many would say I’m crazy but I think he has a nice arm, throws too many picks but I think he is good

          1. Most of those Quarterbacks you are naming have superstar wide recievers… whose Cam’s? Steve Smith was the closest to one and the Panthers released him last year. Now that Kelvin Benjamin and Cam look for them to become one of the top qb/wr duo in the league, with ten plus wins.

          2. Dude just stop lying PLEASE!!! You would never take anyone not named Brady, Manning, Brees, Rogers, Wilson , or Roethlisberger over Cam. Anyone else would have died on the field from taking half the beating Cam has taken over his very short career This guy hasn’t had a real Oline since entering the league. Then there’s the Wr group Steve was it until last year. Oh by the way whens the last time we had two receivers go over 1000 yards in the same year. So much has gone to the defense as far as drafting goes its past time for the offense to be the focal point of the rebuilding process. Last year was a start. In 2013 we had a less then mediocre wr core and he still had us sitting at 12-4. Listen this guy is still developing into and he is still light years ahead of a lot of QBs in the league with so little talent on the offensive side of the ball. Other than those six guys I named earlier there isn’t another QB in the league I would take over him which would make him a top ten QB

          3. I wouldn’t take Roethlisberger or Manning, or Brees over Cam. These guys are passed their prime. Can brings an element that those Quarterbacks don’t. Anyone who could make Gene Chitzik a national championship coach is a winner.

          4. If you think Cam Newton is anywhere near Andrew Luck, Tony Romo, or Phillip Rivers that is insane

          5. Peyton has always been a loser even in college. Regular season champ. Don’t believe me ask Vanderjact.

  13. He is a 10 year old kid, in all honesty I think his opinion comes from his Dad who is not a panthers fan. I believe he just wrote an article on whatever his dad says as they watch the game together. This is very negative publicity, but at the same time if it makes Cam go out and work even harder I am all for it.

  17. the negativity on cam in our own fanbase is ridiculous. the people that always trash cam are usually old /middle aged people that simply dont accept him for his personality and the play he plays the game as a scrambling qb compared to a pocket passer like luck .
people dont remember the struggle we had with clausen , matt moore and jake delhomme towards the end of his time in carolina.
cam newton made us go from a laughing stock team like the jaguars and raiders to a back to back playoff team , you fairweathers can argue that we dident deserve because of our record and you can cy about steve smith all you want but last year wasa rebuilding year and cam was injured last year and played good .

you ignorant fair weather fans cried for derek anderson when we almost lost to the bucs twice with him , dont get me wrong hes a good back up but not a better starter then cam.
i wont be shocked if cam decides to pull a lebron on us because half of our fan base sucks , we got so many great die hard fans but the other half of them are some negative ,f fairweather fans that trash cam and gettleman .

cam newton made us go from a laughing stock team like the jaguars and raiders to a back to back playoff team , you fairweathers can argue that we dident deserve because of our record and you can cy about steve smith all you want but last year wasa rebuilding year and cam was injured last year and played good .

you ignorant fair weather fans cried for derek anderson when we almost lost to the bucs twice with him , dont get me wrong hes a good back up but not a better starter then cam.
i wont be shocked if cam decides to pull a lebron on us because half of our fan base sucks , we got so many great die hard fans but the other half of them are some negative ,f fairweather fans that trash cam and gettleman .

  19. What is sad here isn’t what the kid wrote, it is about what his parents did not teach him which is 1) while we all want our teams to win games and win a Super Bowl winning isn’t the most important thing what is the important thing is the teams compete and are in every game to the end without quitting or giving up 2) the way the team carries itself after a victory or lose 3) football is a team sport, not one player can win or loose the game by themselves 4) nobody is perfect everybody makes mistakes 5) true fans stay fans even when their team looses dose not make it to the playoffs
