Yes, Michael Oher was the subject of a movie. You knew that. Here are six of the more significant things we learned Monday when the Panthers’ new left tackle met with local media for the first time:

He Didn’t Enjoy His Time with the Titans

After signing a four-year, $20 million deal in Tennessee last offseason, Oher had a year to forget with his home state team. The Titans cut him in February, and it was clear he was holding his tongue when pressed to describe why things didn’t work out.

“I like things to be run the right way. Doing things right. Just being on top of things. I’m just glad I’m in a good organization with guys that do it the right way … I’m trying to put that behind me and move forward.”

His Troublesome Toe is Feeling Better

Oher, who had been bothered by toe injuries for years, was limited to 11 games in 2014. But after undergoing surgery in December, he says the pain caused by bone spurs and cartilage damage has subsided significantly.

“During the game in my stance, I’d be thinking about that rather than thinking about the guy that I’m going against … Last season it just flared up worse than it ever has, and I just needed to have it worked on. I got it done, and I feel a sense of relief already. It’s definitely improving.”

He Needs to Improve Fundamentals

Oher can overpower a defender, but his effectiveness largely depends on his technique. He’s lost his way a bit the past couple seasons, and now hopes to clean things up by reuniting with offensive line coach John Matsko, who was Oher’s first position coach in Baltimore.

“He’s the kind of guy that’s going to do everything over and over and over until you have it down. He’s going to work you … I’m a big fan of fundamentals and technique and doing everything right.”

He Received a Warm Welcome in Carolina

The Panthers needed to add a left tackle this offseason, and Oher needed to find a new home. Former longtime tackle Jordan Gross was one of a number of ambassadors who reached out to Oher.

“I talked to so many guys that were here before I even signed, so that was another exciting thing for me. I knew they wanted me here. I felt like I was coming out of college … It means a lot just to know they really wanted me here in Charlotte.”

He’s Never Blocked for a Guy Like Cam Newton

The four quarterbacks Oher has played in front of as a pro: Joe Flacco, Jake Locker, Charlie Whitehurst, Zach Mettenberger.

“Cam, he’s a specimen. I watched him walk into the locker room. He looks great. I’m excited to play with him. I talked to Jordan Gross about it, and he was saying (Newton) saved him from a lot of sacks. It’ll be fun. I’ve always admired just watching him in his pads. He looks the part.”

He Has Plenty of Motivation

The second half of Oher’s career has been a disappointment. Many assume he left his best days behind in Baltimore. But now he has a chance to add another chapter to his story.

“I’m still chasing greatness and want to be great. I still have time, (and) I feel like I have the ability, the attitude and just want to be great and not let these guys down.”
