QUARTERBACKS (3): Cam Newton, Derek Anderson, Joe Webb
If Newton was healthy, the Panthers may have had an extra spot open. But while Webb is Newton insurance, he also played well enough to earn a job.
RUNNING BACKS (4): DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Fozzy Whittaker, Mike Tolbert
‘Double Trouble’ is older, but IF healthy, and IF they get help from the line, this group can still deliver. Williams should be ready to go after a light preseason, and a healthy Stewart is an addition few were talking about early in the offseason.
Undrafted rookie Darrin Reaves was released, but could land on practice squad.
RECEIVERS (5): Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant, Brenton Bersin, Philly Brown
It’s not a list that’s going to scare many secondaries, but it’s still a work in progress. A sixth WR could be added soon, and while the Panthers have faith in Brown, the undrafted rookie wasn’t great in the preseason as a returner.
Bersin still needs to work to get a jersey on game day, but his inclusion on the team shouldn’t be considered news.
TIGHT ENDS (4): Greg Olsen, Ed Dickson, Brandon Williams, Richie Brockel
Three pass catchers and a glue guy.
Dickson’s production — and the Panthers desire to play two-TE sets — will hinge on the offensive line. The Williams Project is moving along nicely, and he should get more offensive snaps in his second season.
OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Ryan Kalil, Brian Folkerts, Byron Bell, Garry Williams, Nate Chandler, David Foucault, Amini Silatolu, Trai Turner, Fernando Velasco, Andrew Norwell
The middle of the line is solid with Kalil, Silatolu and Turner. Neither Bell nor Chandler has played well enough to alleviate concerns at tackle.
If healthy, Williams provides good depth, as does Velasco and Folkerts.
Undrafted rookies Norwell and Foucault were Saturday’s biggest surprises, but one may go soon if the Panthers bring in a free agent.
