When the Panthers put right tackle Nate Chandler on injured reserve last week, they knew they would have to start their seventh different starting line combination in as many games. They did not know they would have to start a guy whose regular-season experience consists of just a few snaps.

IMG_0914 2Mike Remmers, who the Panthers signed off the Rams practice squad last month, will start at right tackle Sunday against the Vikings. The only other time he has been active in his career was last season when he was with the Chargers. But Remmers played just four snaps in that game before he suffered a high ankle sprain.

“Obviously I was really frustrated with that,” Remmers said Friday. “I was always hoping that I would at least get another chance, and I’m very thankful to be getting another opportunity to go out there and show everyone what I can do.”

Earlier this week, it appeared Amini Silatolu was the front-runner to replace Chandler. But Silatolu, who has started 25 games at left guard, had his surgically-repaired knee flare up after Wednesday’s practice.

“The next day he came in, he was pretty sore,” coach Ron Rivera said. “He really struggled with that, and today it was even worse. We’re a little concerned, or a lot concerned, I should say.”

Rivera did not want to say Silatolu could be bound for injured reserve, but he may have to sit out another week or two, at least.

So for now, right tackle belongs to Remmers.

“Everyone’s been really helpful and encouraging. I just want to go out there and make my blocks. Do what I am supposed to do,” Remmers said.

“I’m very thankful to be here and have the opportunity to go out there and play.”
