Charlotte-Based Lawyer on Greg Hardy: “He Should Feel a Lot Better Now”

[vc_row_inner no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”]In the 34 years he’s practiced law, George Laughrun has represented a number of Panthers’ players who have faced legal trouble. One of the most recent cases was in 2009 when a man sued former linebacker Jon Beason, who was accused of physical assault. A jury eventually ruled in favor of Beason. While filling in on WFNZ’s ‘The Drive’ Tuesday afternoon, I talked to Laughrun about the Greg Hardy situation. Laughrun is not representing Hardy, but he has been following the case closely. And while a defense lawyer naturally skews toward that side, he is one of Charlotte’s most-respected attorneys. You can hear the entire interview at this link, and below, we’ve transcribed some of Laughrun’s most interesting answers. On where the case appears to stand right now:“(Hardy) should feel a lot better now than he did the 20-some hours he spent in jail. If it happened, why wouldn’t she show up on two occasions? I think that shows a lot about her credibility and believability. Why wouldn’t you want to air that out and get that straight? If you were so afraid of this man, why wouldn’t you want to get a restraining order on him?”On if there was anything to read into Nicole Holder (the accuser) parting ways with her attorney so quickly?“No. People change lawyers like they change doctors.”On if a bench trial could happen June 27, the next scheduled court date:“Because it’s not a felony case, (the prosecutor) will be at the mercy of this alleged victim. Will she show up? If she shows up, what will be her state of mind? Will she be believable? Will she be credible? … If I were representing her, I would want her to tell her story every chance she could before anybody that would listen. The truth stays the same, and you’d want her in court, under oath, to say ‘Here’s what happened that night. Here’s what he did to me.’ But the fact she didn’t show up twice, it says to me volumes about the state’s case against Greg Hardy.”[share title=”Share this Post” facebook=”true” twitter=”true” google_plus=”true” linkedin=”true” pinterest=”true” reddit=”true” email=”true”]
