Daryl Worley: ‘I Was Very Unimpressed With the Way I Played’

The Carolina Panthers are well aware of the speed bumps ahead for their three rookie cornerbacks. On Saturday, it was Daryl Worley who went through the growing pains.

While James Bradberry had a second straight solid preseason game and Zack Sanchez intercepted his first pass as a pro, Tennessee targeted Worley.

Of quarterback Marcus Mariota's 10 attempts, six went to Titans matched up against Worley. All six were completed for a combined 62 yards.

"I was very unimpressed with the way I played," Worley admitted afterward. "I was playing a little bit not as aggressive as I'm used to because of some of the calls and not being able to challenge balls and routes the way I would've liked."

It's not like it was a disastrous, performance, though. Worley didn't allow a deep ball or touchdown, and he should have had underneath help on at least one of the completions. Plus, it's the preseason, when days like this are going to happen — especially to a guy in his second NFL game.

"I’d like to see him — obviously based on what the call is — play the techniques a little bit better," coach Ron Rivera said. "He had an opportunity to make a couple of plays and he didn’t.

"Again, it’s one of those learning curves that he will go through as a rookie."

Worley finished with five stops, second-most behind defensive back Colin Jones. That, of course, is a product of being around receivers who caught the ball. But if there's a positive from Worley's day, it was the sure tackling. That's something he'll need to keep doing against teams who could use similar game plans against the Panthers' lethal front-seven.

"I knew they were going to do quick game," Worley said, "but not as much (as they did). They came out, made a couple good throw and catches. I've got to be more aggressive on those types of throws.

"It was a learning experience, honestly, for me. Being able to understand what was going on and being able to adjust in the game, it'll come with experience and being able to get more reps."
