A week after Carolina coach Ron Rivera supported the idea of Steve Smith retiring with the Panthers, general manager Dave Gettleman wasn't willing to go down that road.
"That's way above my pay grade," he said.
It's not surprising, of course, considering the fallout from Gettleman's controversial decision to release the franchise's best and most popular player in 2014.
But the sense is the Panthers as an organization are firmly behind the idea of allowing Smith to retire in the city where he played 13 seasons and still lives.
"We would be honored if Steve retired as a Carolina Panther," Director of Communications Steven Drummond said.
