Black and Blue Review

Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

TRANSCRIPT: David Mayo Conference Call

RE: Reaction to being drafted by Carolina“I couldn’t be happier, I am so excited to be in an organization like this. I visited there and really loved the coaches and staff. I think it’s going to be a great fit.”RE: Describing his visit“I think normal stuff. Meeting with coaches and I got the chance to learn the defense a little bit, that was good. I met with Sean McDermott, the defensive coordinator, he and I had a great talk. I got a chance to meet Luke Kuechly, he seems like a great guy. He’s obviously an outstanding football player. Just the way they conduct themselves, the city of Charlotte, I think it’s just going to be a great place to play.”RE: Thoughts on Luke Kuechly as a player“He is outstanding. I am so fortunate to go to a place like this where I can learn from a player like that. Just right off the bat, I think he went to Boston College and just right off the bat started playing like a boss. I am really excited. Hopefully I can learn a thing or two from him. He will set the tone and give me the right example. It’s going to be great, I’m really excited to play under him.”RE: His huge tackle numbers in college and how he compares to Luke Kuechly“I don’t know him on a personal level. From what I hear he is a very hard working guy, a great leader, he likes to lead by example. I would like to say that’s how I like to play football. I am going to give my best effort on every play, I want to get better and continue to get better. That’s going to be my goal every day in practice and every workout. From what I hear, that’s the type of player he is. He gets off right off the bat and he is making plays. That is going to be my goal, I am going to come out there and do my best.”RE: If he has a relationship with (fellow Scappoose, Ore. native) Derek Anderson“Not on a personal level, no. I think he graduated, I don’t know, eight years before I did. I don’t know him very well. I know my dad has kept in contact with his parents. They have talked every once in a while, and they have given me some tips here and there. Seems like a really good guy.”RE: His living situation in Santa Monica, California while at Santa Monica College“It was pretty crazy, but it was where I felt that I needed to play to earn my division one scholarship that I felt I deserved, and I knew I could play at. I just did whatever it took. The price of living down there is just insane. I ended up finding a place that was in my price range, and it was a shed, so I took it.”RE: The cost of shed in Santa Monica“It’s crazy to say it, but it’s $450 it cost me every month.”RE: Description of his living arrangement“I had a bed and this little ottoman thing for my clothes. That was it. It was cement floors, and it wasn’t insulated. I ran an extension cord from the house out to the shed so I could power my computer, power my phone at night, and a lamp and a heater in the winter.”RE: Arrangement of showering and meals“I was able to use the house for the kitchen. They gave me some shelf space for food. I could use their shower and bathroom in the house. They didn’t have any room for me to stay in the house, so I just slept out in the shed. When I needed a shower and stuff like that or to eat, I would just go in the house.”
