Panthers’ Top Two Picks Suffer Minor Setbacks on First Day

The excitement at Panthers rookie minicamp dampened Friday when the team’s top two draft picks suffered injuries. Fortunately for Carolina, neither ailment appeared major.First-round linebacker Shaq Thompson tweaked a hamstring when he slipped midway through the middle of the afternoon session. Thompson was forced to watch the rest of practice, and the missed reps are what concerned coach Ron Rivera the most.Thompson has to head back to school after this weekend because Washington is on the quarter system, so the Panthers were hoping to get him as much work as possible. He may be out on the field for the installation portion of Saturday’s session, but it’s unlikely he’ll go through many drills.”You don’t want him to go out and hurt it and then he can’t work out when he’s gone. So we’ve got to be smart about that one,” Rivera said. While Thompson was watching, second-round receiver Devin Funchess limped off with a leg cramp near the end of the afternoon session. After the morning practice, the Michigan native admitted he needed some time to get acclimated to a new climate.”You thought you were in shape when you were at home working out with trainers, but then you come out here, and it’s different,” he said.Temperatures in Charlotte were in the 80s Friday afternoon, so while it wasn’t sultry Spartanburg, it wasn’t Ann Arbor, either.”It’s a jump coming from 55 to 82, so it hit me hard today,” Funchess said, after getting an IV. “My body just has to get used to it.”
