Duke’s Jamison Crowder Showcases Speed

After a disappointing performance at the NFL Combine, receiver Jamison Crowder gave his draft stock a big boost during Duke’s Pro Day.Scouts from 30 teams (the Jets and Cardinals were the only no-shows) watched Wednesday as Crowder ran an unofficial 4.39 in both of his 40-yard dash attempts, a huge improvement from the 4.56 he ran last month in Indy.”I knew I was faster than what the combine numbers were, so I just kept training and I knew I had to come out here and prove it,” Crowder said.”I felt a lot better running routes, catching passes. I thought overall today was a pretty good day.”The Monroe, N.C. native displayed good hands and quickness during drills, failing to catch only a couple passes that appeared to be overthrows by quarterback Anthony Boone. The biggest knock on Crowder is his size. At 5-foot-8 1/8, he measured in as the shortest prospect at January’s Senior Bowl, but the wideout-slash-returner shined that week on the field.”He’s kind of got that Steve Smith, little-man mentality,” Boone said. “He’s got that nasty tenacity to him, and he’s a fighter. He doesn’t like to be shut down, and anybody who gets him is going to be able to put him anywhere on the field.”Of the 10 Blue Devils who worked out, most attention focused on Crowder, projected as a mid-round pick, and Laken Tomlinson, a super smart guard who could go as early as the second round.Crowder currently has two private workouts scheduled. He’ll meet with the Patriots Friday and the Bucs next Wednesday. The Panthers have also expressed interest in getting a closer look, but that date hasn’t yet been set.”That’s what my parents have been telling me all the time – once you get done with all this testing, get to the football business, that’s when your real talents come out,” Crowder said.”I’ve just got to prove myself, just prove that I can play, and prove that I belong in the league.”[feature_headline type=”center” level=”h3″ looks_like=”h3″ icon=”hand-o-down”]WATCH VIDEO FROM DUKE’S PRO DAY

Move along folks, nothing to see here.

Crowder’s 0.17 seconds improvement in his 40 time is exactly what was explained at the Combine. The new fully electronic Combine timing system was explained to be 0.175 seconds slower than Pro Day hand timed 40’s.

    Jamison Crowder (5’8 1/8″, 185, 30 3/8″ arms, 8 3/4″ hands, 4.56-40, 1.70-10) improved by 0.17 to a Pro Day 4.39-40.

    Mario Alford (5’8 1/2″, 180, 31 1/4″ arms, 9 3/8″ hands, 4.43-40, 1.64-10) improved by 0.18 to a Pro Day 4.25-40.

I think fans are overrating Crowder and Justin Hardy a bit, I think they are both 4th rounders personally. Had he clocked another 4.56 I’d definitely say solid 4th rounder.

Whoever get Justin hardy is going to get a steal. I hope it’s the Panthers. Make it happen.

That’s what the locals are saying. I just hope they don’t reach, and I know Gettleman won’t (Hurney would have). I have heard people say he’s as high as second round. The team needs to use its second round pick on a second round talent, period (or a first round talent if one slips). I wouldn’t pick Hardy before the fourth round. I hear people saying “they shouldn’t wait til the fourth round because someone will probably take him in the 3rd and we pick late”. okay, and? People are talking like Hardy will take a franchise to the promised land and he’s a once-in-a-lifetime talent. He’ll have a solid NFL career, as will 10-20 other WRs in this draft. If we pick an undisputed 2nd-3rd round talent in the 3rd round and he’s not there when we draft in the fourth, that just means we grab some other appropriate talent. There’s no need to reach on Hardy or get overhyped on him; Panthers fans are notorious for overrating local talents.

I do like the Panthers but first and foremost I am a ECU pirate and witnessed every home game of his career. He’s not gonna run a 4.2 forty but not many wr do. He gets open by running solid routes and he is a playmaker. Cam needs to start helping the receivers out by not throwing so hard on short crossing routes. He is more than just a slot receiver. He can also help on special teams. They need an enormous amount of help at wr. Yes they got Ginn back, Benjamin, maybe could sign Greg Jennings and that other guy from the eagles. Hardy could easily be the 3rd wr with Benjamin and Ginn and is an upgrade over an aging jerrico cotchery. The Panthers have drafted worse at wr than they could if they draft hardy. Armani Edwards ring a bell

          • Jason Alston

Armanti Edwards is the reason I make the point, I bring him and Kenny Moore up all the time when I’m commenting about the Panthers. The same way App fans were talking then is similar to how you’re talking now. Thank goodness my college – wack as it was – didn’t have a football program so I’ll never fall prey to this. And just because they reached on Armanti in the 3rd round 5 years ago is no reason to go and reach on another receiver in the 3rd round this year. Yeah if he’s there when we pick in the 4th, or if Crowder is, I think it’s a worthwhile pick. But there will be second round talents that slip to the 3rd this year, there always are. You look go with a guy in the 3rd that you had pegged for the second or third, you don’t concern yourself with some guy who is a questionable third/probable fourth. And his local appeal should not come into consideration, we’ve made that mistake too many times.

Hardy is actually a wr and s very good one at that. He actually did play some qb in hs and can throw a nice deep ball but the difference is he played wr all 4 years of college instead of drafting qb who was a qb in college and thinking they can make him a pro wr. There have historical been great qrs available in the latter rounds. Only time will tell to whether or not he can be an all time great. I would like the opportunity to be able to see him play in the pros in the same state I live in.
