Help Wanted: Running Backs

As of Tuesday morning, this is the list of healthy running backs on the Panthers’ roster:

  1. Darrin Reaves – undrafted rookie; returned to practice a couple weeks ago after injuring knee during preseason
  2. Lache Seastrunk – Redskins 6th-round pick in 2014 draft; added to practice squad last week

The Panthers are hopeful DeAngelo Williams (hamstring) can return after missing the last two games, but Jonathan Stewart is unlikely to play against the Ravens, and fullback Mike Tolbert has already been ruled out. While many fans are intrigued by Seastrunk, it’s important to remember the Redskins didn’t even add him to their practice squad after they spent a draft pick on him, so he’s unlikely to have much of a role just yet.But a quick observation from Monday: When players left their afternoon meetings, Seastrunk eagerly asked center Brian Folkerts if he could help him learn his responsibilities in pass protection. It’s unclear why Seastrunk specifically went to Folkerts for help, but it’s an encouraging sign to see the rookie trying to cram in as much learning as possible right now.And if you’re what kind of reinforcements the Panthers may bring in for their banged-up backs this week, a quick look at still unsigned, but experienced free agents revealed guys like Michael Bush, LaMichael James, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

3rd year RB LaMichael James (5’8″, 195, 30 1/4″ arms, 9″ hands, and 24 years old) was the 49ers 2nd round pick (#61) in 2012, and is the best fit for the Panthers.

James has good speed (an “official” Combine 4.45-40, “unofficially” a 4.37-40, a 1.60-10, a 6.88-3 cone drill, and a 4.12-20 yard shuttle), and has averaged 4.6 and 4.9 YPC in his 2 year career, in limited carries.

James greatest value might be as a returner. Here are his 2013 return numbers:

Punt Returns – 23 returns, 12 fair catches, for a 10.9 yard average, with a long gain of 40 yards

Kickoff Returns – 12 returns, for a 26.8 yard average, with a long gain of 41 yards.
