J.J. Jansen Will Play, Saving Panthers From Long Snapping Drama

Of all the interviews Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen has done in his 9-year career, the subject of this request was likely a first.

“You wanted to talk to the long snappers?” Olsen said as he walked toward the corner of the locker room that houses the team’s specialists.

I wanted to get his response to something J.J. Jansen had said earlier. The long snapper, who popped up on the injury report Tuesday after not feeling well, had his own media session Wednesday where he assured reporters he was doing much better.

"I'm good, feel good, ready to go,” he said.

But on a short week, the Panthers had to scramble a bit in case Jansen couldn’t play against the Cowboys. That included giving Jared Allen some reps during Tuesday’s practice. Yes, that Jared Allen, also known as the NFL’s active sack leader. What you may not know is he started long snapping when he was 8, and he’s done it in emergency situations twice in the pros.

As willing as Allen was to jump in there, the Panthers took a safer route, adding free agent long snapper Danny Aiken to the roster Wednesday morning.

"Seriously, how bad was I yesterday?” Allen joked. "I thought I was pretty good."

According to the team’s starting long snapper, Allen was better than Olsen, at least.

"I've seen Greg do it. He tries to draw a crowd just so everyone can see him do it. And he can do it, but he's not as good as Jared,” Jansen said.

"Greg thinks he's the best long snapper, including guys who do it professionally."

Olsen did gain game day experience when he helped out the punt team briefly at Miami. But “Greg Olsen long snapper” doesn’t uncover visual proof on YouTube as it does with a similar search for Allen.

That takes us back to Olsen’s interview.

He was so accommodating, he interrupted his lunch to do it. But the Q&A ended before any Qs.

“So J.J. says Jared is a better long snapper than you."

“Blasphemy!” Olsen replied, now walking away from the specialist’s corner where Jansen was having a good laugh.

“Quote – blasphemy."

Noted, Greg. Noted.
