Josh Norman Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

After forcing a pair of turnovers and scoring his first career touchdown in the Panthers' season-opening win against the Jaguars, Carolina cornerback Josh Norman was disappointed he didn't win NFC Defensive Player of the Week. Three games later, he's added that honor to the Player of the Month award he won six days ago.

Norman on Wednesday was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after racking up four tackles, two interceptions, three passes defensed and a touchdown against the Bucs in Week 4. When Norman returned a Jameis Winston interception 46 yards, he became the first player with two interception returns for touchdowns in the first four weeks of a season since Charles Woodson in 2008.

The Panthers lead the NFL with eight interceptions, and Norman's league-best four are more than 20 teams have totaled. Three defenses — the Redskins, Saints and Seahawks — don't have a single pick this season.

Norman is the first Carolina cornerback named NFC Defensive Player of the Week since Ricky Manning Jr. in 2003. He also joins big names on the short list of Panthers who have won NFC Defensive Player of the Month and Week in the same season: linebacker Sam Mills (1995, 1996), defensive end Julius Peppers (2006, 2008), linebacker Thomas Davis (2013).
