Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

BBR This Morning: #ThrowbackThursday Feat., Luke Kuechly

L uke Kuechly is never going to be like Ray Lewis. No defensive player in Panthers’ history has had a more impressive two-year start than Kuechly. If he keeps this pace, he could join Lewis in the Hall of Fame one day. This is more of a personality analogy.Kuechly’s soft-spoken nature is well-documented. He’s essentially the antithesis of Lewis, who chest-pounded his way through 17 attention-seeking seasons. That’s actually not a direct shot at Lewis. Love him or hate him, it’s impossible not to respect a guy who wins multiple rings and makes a bushel of Pro Bowls. And shoot, when Kuechly’s on the field, there’s not a lot soft-spoken about him. It’s just, off the field, the Panthers linebacker has been remarkably quiet for all his success. As a rookie, it was understandable when he deferred to veterans like Jon Beason and Thomas Davis. But even last year, the eventual Defensive Player of the Year seemed to be holding back.Kuechly could be slowly slipping out of his shell this offseason. He recently partnered with Project Life in his first major charitable campaign, and this week, he was morphed into a national ad – literally.[x_video_embed type=”16:9″]

But perhaps we’ve been wrong about Kuechly the last couple years. He may not be all that quiet.Last week I stumbled on a video from his Boston College days. Produced by Raycom Sports, it follows Kuechly and his family around their hometown of Cincinnati. If you’re a Panthers fan who hasn’t seen it, you need to find nine minutes to watch. From the interactions with his younger brother to the competition with his dad, it shows sides of the Panthers’ star many haven’t seen.So yeah, he’s never going to be as bombastic as a guy like Lewis, but the real Luke Kuechly may just be starting to emerge in Carolina.[x_video_embed type=”16:9″]

BBR Nuggets:

  • Panthers’ Director of College Scouting Don Gregory described the receiver depth in this draft to the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
  • If Carolina was on “Game of Thrones,” via reddit.
  • Guessing many of you won’t agree where Rotoworld’s Evan Silva places the Panthers in his pre-draft roster rankings.
  • Sounds like Ryan Kalil may be doing some more ticket giveaways on Twitter. The Lions went Wednesday.
  • Grades given sooner than three years after a draft are dumb. National Football Post flashed back to Cam Newton’s 2011 class.

Coming Up:

  • We recorded the first BBR Podcast with inaugural guest, Rotoworld NFL Draft writer Josh Norris on Tuesday. Post-production will hopefully be done to get it posted sometime Thursday.
