NFL Has a Decision to Make, One Ron Rivera Isn’t Touching

A day after one of the NFL's uglier one-on-one battles in recent memory, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera avoided condemning the actions of either player involved.

For much of Sunday's game at MetLife Stadium, Panthers cornerback Josh Norman and Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. went beyond acceptable jawing and physical play. They combined for five personal fouls, but because Beckham's extracurriculars were particularly vicious, he could be facing a suspension.

"That’s up to the league. The league has got to make the decision," Rivera said Monday.

The officials could have made their own decision during the game, but they chose only to warn both sidelines and throw a few flags.

According to Rivera, both the back judge and official Terry McAulay asked him to help calm the situation. The Panthers did chat with Norman, and after Beckham had picked up his first penalty in the first half, things settled down slightly. They escalated in the third quarter.

The most egregious moment came when Beckham launched himself head first into Norman's helmet. That Beckham remained in the game was a bad look for a league supposedly concerned about player safety.

"Probably," Rivera said when asked if the NFL should take a close look at that play.

Rivera reminded that officials can sometimes miss things, which may explain why Beckham wasn't thrown out.

As far as why Rivera wasn't more upset with Norman's actions, it was because he was the better-behaved one — relatively.

"It’s about being the instigator more so than anything else. That’s the biggest thing from my perspective that I look for. If I see a guy instigating I’m going to pull him aside and talk with him," Rivera said.

"I didn’t necessarily need to say anything to Josh. The referee did it for me. His teammates did it for me, and I thought his teammates handled it very well."

Rivera did have a brief chat with Norman before he met with reporters after the game. And for the most part, his comments were appropriate for what had happened.

The two talked again Monday morning, with at least one ready to put it all behind them.

"He and I had a nice conversation, a very positive conversation. I told him I was very proud of the way he's handled things," Rivera said.

"For the most part, we're going to move on from that, obviously, because the next thing that's coming up is we've got a game with Atlanta. And our biggest focus and our main goal right now is to get home field throughout and we've got to go and get ready for Atlanta."
