Panthers Claim Defensive Tackle Robert Thomas Off Waivers

Another day, another hog mollie.

The Carolina Panthers on Friday claimed defensive tackle Robert Thomas off waivers. The 6-foot-3, 325-pounder was released by the Dolphins Thursday before the first round of the NFL Draft.

The Panthers used their pick at No. 30 on Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Vernon Butler, who's 6-foot-4, 323 pounds. So in 17 hours, Carolina added nearly one-third of a ton to the middle of their defensive line.

Thomas was signed by the Redskins as an undrafted rookie in 2014 and spent most of that season on the practice squad. After Washington had cut him during final cuts last summer, Thomas bounced from Seattle's practice squad to Miami's. He made his NFL regular-season debut in Week 13 against the Ravens but injured his elbow after just 21 plays.

The Panthers now have eight defensive tackles on the roster: Thomas, Butler, Kawann Short, Star Lotulelei, Paul Soliai, Kyle Love, Chas Alecxih and Eric Crume. Five will likely make the final 53-man cut.
