Panthers Defensive End Greg Hardy Arrested

Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy was arrested after an incident of alleged domestic violence Tuesday. He faces misdemeanor charges of communicating threats and assault on a female. Screen Shot 2014-05-13 at 2.17.34 PMAccording to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, they responded to a call around 4:18 a.m. Tuesday. The victim claimed she had been physically assaulted and threatened by Hardy. She also stated that she and Hardy had been in a relationship since last year.According to the police report, she suffered minor bruises and scratches and refused treatment. The report also states alcohol as an incapacity type. Hardy was seen at a Charlotte nightclub with his girlfriend Monday night.Hardy turned himself in Tuesday and was arrested. In a statement, the Panthers said:[blockquote type=”center”]“We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate.”[/blockquote]Per Mecklenburg County policy, a 24-hour “cooling off” policy is required for individuals arrested for domestic violence. Hardy will spend Tuesday night in jail. A judge will decide his bond during a hearing Wednesday morning.Hardy would have been a marquee defensive free agent this offseason, but the Panthers brought him back for 2014 with a franchise tag that cost $13.1 million. While there have been assumptions the team would give him a long-term deal, a league source has made it clear that would not happen before the July 15 deadline. The Panthers took Hardy in the sixth-round of the 2010 draft. One of the reasons he lasted so long was because teams had character concerns based on his time at Mississippi.During his four years in Carolina, Hardy has not completely alleviated those concerns. The Panthers have been leery of giving him a new contract, and not just because they have been salary-cap strapped.Going by only what he has done on the field, Hardy has turned into a big-contract player. After totaling just seven sacks his first two seasons, he exploded for 26 the last two years, including a franchise-tying 15 sacks in 2013.Despite outside clamoring for an offensive tackle or another position of need, general manager Dave Gettleman took Missouri defensive end Kony Ealy in the second round of last week’s draft. Not only did Ealy have a first-round grade for the Panthers, but his selection could also have been made with a Hardy-less 2015 in mind.[share title=”Share this Post” facebook=”true” twitter=”true” google_plus=”true” linkedin=”true” pinterest=”true” reddit=”true” email=”true”]

  1. Well know you why teams are hiring physiatrist to evaluate players. It’s more than just the talent of a player anymore. So is going to be interesting to see if Hardy signs a deal to stay a Panther.

  2. It happens to the best of them. It is the lifestyle of the athletes we have this day. Fast money, women & all types of agents to feel out of their normal state of mind. It is what society affords those who they set up on a pedestal. It also falls hard.
