Panthers’ Final Answer: No Greg Hardy in 2015

Greg Hardy has spent the last week retweeting fans who want to see the defensive end play another season in Carolina. Unfortunately for him, the Panthers’ social media manager doesn’t own the team. After his domestic violence case was dismissed earlier this month, a number of Hardy’s teammates went to bat for him, asking owner Jerry Richardson to give him another chance. According to multiple league sources, some momentum did build for a Hardy return in the days after his legal situation was cleared up. But, sources say, that slim possibility quickly cooled and eventually ended last week. With Hardy facing a possible suspension from the NFL, and with Richardson’s difficulty in getting past the situation Hardy put himself and the Panthers in, the team will watch him go elsewhere in 2015.None of this qualifies as BREAKING NEWS, but the flicker of hope some had for Hardy to wear a Carolina uniform again has been extinguished.

    1. If they don’t draft a starting LT in the 1st round, they may not have a LT for nest season, but they at least have a chance of getting a DE later in the draft.

DE Preston Smith (6’4 7/8″, 271, 34″ arms, 10 5/8″ hands) had a very good Combine, running much faster than expected (4.71-40, 1.60-10, 7.07-3 Cone, and a 4.28-20 Yard Shuttle, with a 34″ vertical, 10’1″ broad jump, and 24 bench reps), and is now projected to go in the 2nd round, so the Panthers might have to trade up to get him.

DE Anthony Chickillo (6’3 1/8″, 267, 33 1/2″ arms, and 10 1/8″ hands) also had a good Combine (4.79-40, 1.59-10, a 7.17-3 Cone, 4.25-20 Yard Shuttle, with a 34.5″ vertical, a 9’6″ broad jump, and 27 bench reps), and he’s currently projected to be available for the Panthers in the 3rd round.

      DE Geneo Grissom (6’3/8″, 262, 33 3/8″ arms, and 10 1/4″ hands) had a pretty good Combine (4.81-40, 1.66-10, 7.24-3 Cone, and a 4.38-20 Yard Shuttle, a 37″ vertical, a 9’9″ broad jump, and 20 bench reps) in the later rounds.

DE Frank Clark (6’2 7/8″, 271, 34 3/8″ arms, and 10 1/8″ hands) had a Combine as good as Smith (a 4.79-40, 1.69-10, 7.08-3 Cone, 4.05-10, a 9’10” broad jump, a 38.5″ vertical, and 19 bench reps), but he may not even be drafted, because of a domestic violence problem.

      1. They’re taking a chance on any Tackle outside of Collins, Scherff and Peat anyway, and most likely they’ll be gone by the time we pick. There are several second tier tackles that might need development in their first year that could be picked in the second or third round (Fisher, Sambrailo, Clemmings, Smith, Poutasi, etc). I agree that the edge rushers you listed will be options after the first round as well. I’m just saying, if there is a difference maker at WR, CB or DE available at #25, don’t be surprised if they pick some other position besides OT.

  1. JR is cutting off his nose to spite his face, and showing that the Panthers are his hobby, not a business.

JR can’t get over that Hardy was being paid not to play 15 games last season, but it was JR himself who asked for that (suspending him in the 2nd game, and begging the NFL to suspend him for the rest of that time), not Hardy. JR’s ego won’t let him do what’s best for the team, for JR it’s all about the money, and he can’t admit paying Hardy not to play was his idea.

    1. “But, sources say, that slim possibility quickly cooled and eventually ended last week.”

Did you miss that quote? Now if you want him to release his sources, well that’s another issue.

      1. That quote is ambiguous as me reading out my girlfriends measurements and saying that is the reason why she is a bad driver. I will believe it when it’s official. Why spread speculation? To get people to talk about the article, like you and I are doing now. It’s a waste of mine and your time.

  3. I wonder why they haven’t reported this on the Panther’s home site. Maybe they just want it to go away, let everybody get their frustrations out somewhere else then announce it.
I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think Kony Ealy will ever be as good as Hardy. Ealy, Addison & Alexander are all right on the edge of becoming dominate DEs, hopefully one of them will step up.

  5. Too bad. Hardy was an integral part of this defense before all of this happened. Would have loved to keep him in the black and blue, but I completely understand JR’s position. Good luck, Kracken!

    1. I think what you have said here is as sensible as it gets. He’s good. We wanted him. But we understand why JR isn’t going to gamble on bringing him back. Easy.

  9. and to all you “oh wellers” out there, you all should be pissed at this, maybe if YOU ALL HAD A PAIR and had fought to keep THE BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER we have on this team around this would not even be a discussion…..Panthers fans are way too whine and cheese to be REAL FANS…..if this was in a REAL football city like NY, GB, Dallas or Philly, people would be outraged at the thought of letting Hardy go but all of you cowards are too busy on your knees to the great JR to do anything to keep THE BEST D player we have, he is better than Luke, TD, CJ, Star……he made the 2013 the 2nd best in the league and made all those players I mentioned look better than they really are……you see how our front 7 suffered without him but everybody “understands”………….GTFOH
