Panthers Get Head Start, Sign Offensive Tackle Michael Oher

Four days before free agency begins, the Carolina Panthers have already done something they failed to do last offseason. The team brought in a new offensive tackle, signing Michael Oher to a two-year deal Friday afternoon. The Panthers hope Oher can bounce back from a disappointing 2014 season if he works with a familiar face. Best known as the subject of the Oscar Award-nominated movie “The Blind Side,” Oher will reunite with his first NFL offensive line coach. Carolina’s John Matsko was in the same role with the Ravens when they made Oher a first-round pick in 2009.”We look forward to having Michael be a part of what we are building here,” coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. “He’s a pro who understands what it takes to win. A big part of why we pursued Michael was his relationship with offensive line coach John Matsko and the opportunity to have him work with Ray Brown. We are excited to have him.”After five seasons in Baltimore, Oher signed a four-year, $20 million contract in Tennessee last year. But after a toe injury limited the 6-foot-4, 315-pounder to 11 games, he was released by the Titans last month.Oher was ranked 75th among tackles by Pro Football Focus last season, only eight spots ahead of the outgoing Byron Bell. Oher, who’s played both left and right tackle, could be used as a stopgap while the Carolina grooms a younger tackle in 2015.Now the Panthers, who were hoping to get some shopping done before Tuesday’s start of free agency, can turn to their attention to convincing returner/receiver Ted Ginn to return to Carolina.
