Panthers QB Cam Newton Post-Jaguars Transcript

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton's comments to the media after Carolina's 20-9 Week 1 win in Jacksonville.

Opening statement:
"It was a good team win, we're not satisfied, but it took every single person on our roster to contribute today. It wasn't pretty at times but we showed flashes of what we're able to do. It's kind of frustrating at times during the game, but being out there and finding ways to win the football game rather than finding ways to lose. It's a hostile environment. Big shout out to our fans, it was a big difference today. Being able to perform with so many of them out here on our side. That helped us a lot."

What'd you learn about the offense today?
"I don't think we learned anything. It's the first game; we found ways to win and that's all that matters. I'd rather be having this conversation of us with winning over losing on the road. We played a great, young Jacksonville team. We gotta keep gaining momentum as the season takes off."

How big was the Jerricho Cotchery play to get the first down?
"He played big all day. I missed him over the middle but we came back and scored that drive. We're going to need effort like that each and every game. Whether it's myself, the offensive line blocking defensively, as well as special teams, everybody played a big part in this win today. That type of effort sticks out."

How key was taking eight minutes off the clock on that drive?
"That's extremely important, especially in an away game. We take the crowd out of it, started with 94 yards to go, and we found ways to win the game. That's been our biggest thing to take out of the offseason. Many times we found ways not to lose, rather than finding ways to win. We kept the Jags in it and could have imposed our will better. After that second half when we were driving and stalled out, the defense made a big play when Josh took the load off with his big pick-6. We can't keep expecting that from our defense without help from us. It's a give and take thing but I'm happy we got a win."

What energy did Josh Norman bring with his play today?
"Josh had a big day today. It's no surprise to a lot of us. A lot of help from Tillman and the veterans who are constantly in his ear and he's a person that knows what he's worth and he knows what we're expecting from him. Plays are going to be there to be made and he made the best of it."

What happened on the INT?
"My shoulder got hit and I took a lot off the velocity and it was up for grabs. I was trying to go to Funchess on the back shoulder but that can't happen. I have to step up in the pocked and get off that read and take another hit rather than allowing that to happen."

Defense stepping up with Kuechly out?
"It's been the story of our lives up to this point. We can't keep sulking on injured guys. Guys have to step up, that's the nature of the beast. In the NFL, guys are going to get hurt. We understand that and sometimes guys can play through injuries. Luke took a shot, but we have full confidence in Klein that he's gonna come in and do what he does and have the athleticism of TD and Shaq."

Surprised they didn't give you a first down on the early third-down sneak?
"It was close. We just have to do a better job with getting the surge. I thought I got enough to get the first down, but you just can't make it close. When you're playing in a hostile environment with so much going on, we got so much going on, gotta do a better job getting up to the line and getting set, and being more consistent with it."

Have you talked to Luke?
"Yeah, he's fine. I talked to him at halftime and he was doing the procedure then. Everything is on the up and up, nothing to serious we're hoping."
