Week 1 Stats and Superlatives: Panthers vs. Jaguars

The Panthers:

  • Improved to 1-2 all-time in Jacksonville.
  • Are now 8-13 in season openers.
  • Averaged 10.3 plays and 6:27 minutes on their three scoring drives.
  • Had an 18:30-11:30 time of possession advantage in second half.
  • Held the Jaguars to one third-down conversion in the second half. Jacksonville converted just 3 of its 12 third downs for the game while Carolina went 8-for-17.
  • Shut out the Jaguars in the second half, limiting them to just 75 yards.
  • Have allowed a total of 48 points in the fourth quarter over their last 11 regular-season games.
  • Gave up 96 rushing yards. They've held opponents to under 100 yards on the ground in seven of their last eight regular-season games.
  • Are 15-1-1 when scoring at least 20 points since 2013.
  • Have won every coin toss, including the preseason, in 2015.
  • Were called for just three penalties for 22 yards, which were each their fewest ever in a season opener.

Panthers Player Stats:

  • QB Cam Newton won a season-opener for the first time in his career. His 71.3 passer rating was his worst in a Panthers' win since he had a 60.6 at Miami on 11/24/13. Newton rushed 14 times, including two kneel-downs. Those were his most attempts since he carried 17 times in last year's tie in Cincinnati. Newton was sacked twice, his first multi-sack regular-season game since the Vikings got him four times in Week 13 last year.
  • RB Jonathan Stewart gained 22 yards on his first carry and 34 yards on his next 17 attempts.
  • Newton and Stewart combined for 32 of Carolina's 35 rushing attempts. Fozzy Whittaker had two carries; Mike Tolbert had one and rookie Cameron Artis-Payne had none.
  • WR Jerricho Cotchery has already matched his 2014 touchdown total. His only score last year was against the Bucs in Week 15.
  • TE Greg Olsen, who caught one of his three targets, had just 11 receiving yards, his fewest since he had no receptions in the final two games of 2011.
  • TE Ed Dickson caught just one pass, but he didn't have a reception last year until Week 5.
  • DE Charles Johnson, who didn't have a sack last year until Week 5, has 9.5 sacks over his last 13 regular-season games.
  • DE Mario Addison has 10.5 sacks over his last 23 regular-season games. He had 1.5 sacks in the first 29 games of his career.
  • LB Thomas Davis started his 100th career game. His interception was the seventh of his career and the first since 12/22/13 against the Saints.
  • LB Luke Kuechly, who missed the final six plays of the first half and all of the second half, tied Davis for most tackles (7).
  • LB A.J. Klein had a career-high six tackles. Five came after Kuechly left the game with a concussion.
  • CB Josh Norman's interception was the fourth of his career and the return for a touchdown was his first. He forced a fumble for the second time.
  • K Graham Gano has missed his last three field goal attempts of 50+ yards after making seven straight from that distance from 2013 through Week 2 of 2014.

Jaguars Player Stats:

  • QB Blake Bortles had his first multi-interception game since he threw two against the Dolphins in Week 8 last year.
  • RB T.J. Yeldon was held to 15 yards on his final six carries after he picked up 36 yards on six attempts in the first quarter.
