As expected, the Panthers practiced with their full compliment of starters as preparations for the season opener in Tampa Bay ramped up Monday.

Quarterback Cam Newton, guard Trai Turner and defensive ends Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson all returned after missing part of the preseason with injuries.91-1.635

Newton’s status is the most concerning. He’ll start Sunday, but he’ll likely have to play in extra padding to protect his cracked ribs.

Turner should also start, according to head coach Ron Rivera. But the rookie, who hasn’t played since he injured his groin in the second preseason game against the Chiefs, will split snaps with fifth-year veteran Fernando Velasco.

“Tre’s coming off of the groin. We also know it’s going to be hot. We also know he hasn’t had a chance to truly condition like the other guys,” Rivera said. “He’s going to have to be spelled on occasion.”

Hardy and Johnson were each able to take all their reps during Monday’s practice. They probably could have played in Thursday’s preseason finale, but there was no need to force it.

Hardy’s shoulder and Johnson’s hamstring still aren’t 100 percent, but they’ll be out there against the Bucs.

“It’s been frustrating because I haven’t been working like I want to work. I like working after practice, I like working before practice,” Johnson said. “But I’m back now trying to work as hard as possible to get on the field on Sunday.”
