Panthers Release David Foucault, Re-Sign Wes Horton

On Saturday, the Carolina Panthers cut defensive end Wes Horton and added David Foucault to the active roster. Three days later, they reversed the process.

The Panthers on Tuesday re-signed Horton and released Foucault, who was active but didn’t play in Week 4’s win over the Bucs. He had been promoted from the practice squad to provide depth after reserve offensive linemen Amini Silatolu suffered a high-ankle sprain last Thursday.

Fearing another team would grab Foucault off waivers if he was released, the Panthers kept the 6-foot-8, 320-pound French Canadian on the roster throughout 2014. Even though he was far from a finished product, Foucault was forced into action in five games, including a rough Week 9 start against the Saints. The Panthers could try to put him back on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Horton did on Monday, so Carolina brought him back. A starter for 15 games last year, the third-year pro is more of a run stopper than pass rusher. The Panthers needed help with the latter on Sunday, but then they allowed at least 100 rushing yards for just the second time in their last 11 regular-season games.

Doug Martin gained 106 of the Bucs’ 141 yards on the ground, becoming the first running back to reach the century mark against Carolina since Mark Ingram hit 100 for the Saints in Week 9 last year.
