Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Panthers May Get Shaq Thompson Back Earlier Than Expected

Barring any travel hiccups, the Carolina Panthers should have their top pick back sooner than anticipated.LB Shaq Thompson, who has been finishing the quarter at the University of Washington, is scheduled to fly back to Charlotte Tuesday night. If all goes as planned, he’ll join his new teammates for the final two days of OTAs on Wednesday and Thursday.Thompson was last on the field early last month when he tweaked his hamstring during rookie minicamp. He wasn’t expected to return until June 12, which would have been too late for OTAs, but in time for next week’s mandatory minicamp. When Thompson’s schedule became more flexible, he and the Panthers worked out a plan to get him back earlier. While the rookie has plenty to catch up on, the Panthers have tapped into technology to try to keep him up to speed. And apparently, he’s been an eager pupil.“I know (linebackers coach Al Holcolmb) has been sending him the stuff on the iPad and they conference call. Whatever they’re allowed to do. They’ll go through those things in installation,” coach Ron Rivera said. “Shaq will call him at all hours of the day asking questions. The thing Shaq has to remember is when it’s 9 there; it’s midnight here.”(UPDATE: June 10, 11:50 a.m. – Yup, Shaq’s back)

Shaq is back! The #Panthers first-round pick finished school and rejoined the team for practice today! #KeepPounding

The Panthers should invest in 3-D, virtual reality training system (for QB’s, RB’s, O-Linemen, LB’s, CB’s and S’s) now used by the Cowboys (posted yesterday at nfl.com, and several other sites), and that I posted about around 2 weeks ago. The entry level package cost $250,000, from STRIVR Labs.

It’s a goggles-and-headset system, using actual 3-D video (from practices and maybe real games, it does’t say). Arkansas HC Brett Bielema raves about the system, “You can hear us talking and speaking (during a play) and take reps without countable hours (during times that coaching directed practices aren’t allowed). … but it’s also saving their (players) legs.”
