Panthers Sign Derek Anderson Through 2017

[vc_row no_margin=”true”][vc_column width=”1/1″]A day before his probable start in the Carolina Panthers’ preseason finale, backup quarterback Derek Anderson signed a two-year contract extension.

141214_Panthers vs Tampa Bay_0552Anderson’s current deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but it now runs through 2017, when he’ll be 34.

“I’m excited about this for my family. To be here with the players, coaches and management we have — everything is top notch,” Anderson said in a statement. “It was a no-brainer for me.”

Cam Newton’s backup since 2011, Anderson has appeared in 14 games, making two starts. Both of those came in 2014 when he led the Panthers to a sweep of the Bucs by going 49-of-74 for 507 yards and three touchdowns.

“Derek adds stability to the quarterback position as the backup, and we have tremendous confidence in him,” coach Ron Rivera said. “His experience and veteran leadership has been important in the quarterbacks room and with the coaches. We’re securing a veteran player who has been a big part of what we’re building.”

The Panthers will likely hold Newton out of Thursday night’s game in Pittsburgh. Anderson has started the final preseason game against the Steelers each of the past three seasons.[line][vc_raw_html]

  1. This puzzles me. Webb is both capabe and a better fit in our offense. Why does a five year vet with a 100mil contract still need veteran leadership? Nothing against Anderson, its just the team constantly praises Newtons leadership and abilities. Then they undermine it by what they do. This looks like a lack of confidence to me.

      1. Yeah … more than the two games against the worst team in the leage last year. He is a back-up becuase he isn’t a quality starter. He looks good becuase he isn’t needed. We were lucky last year. And to the point, thats two offensive schemes for two diffrent QBs it just makes sense to have a back-up that can run the same game plan.

          1. Yeah..you and me and Cleveland and Arizona…I dont disagree Webb isn’t playing quality defenders. My argument is based on the idea that the entire offense has to chang the way it plays when Anderson is on the feild. Essentially doubling the playes the other 11 have to know. And being that back ups rarely have game plans drawn for them (unless they are starting) that its far more likely to have team failures in any given play.

          2. I understand your point, but that does not appear to have been a problem for the other players in any of D.A.’s appearances. They do not need a new playbook. They just limit the read option. In exchange, they get a more accurate passer.

          3. He’s not even more accurate. &is career number is, I think 53%. Plus the games he played in were planned for him from the start.

          4. He’s more accurate as a Panther.
Look, on balance Cam is clearly preferable. But also on balance, D.A. is preferable to Webb. I don’t think you need to be concerned about lack of confidence in Cam They just signed him to a $100 million deal. This is not an RGIII situation.

          5. Of course his numbers are better as a panther, limited playing time and game management is what back ups do. It isn’t necessarily about whos a better back up opposed to who can become a better back up.Webb has clearly improved and Anderson has been the same since he declined. In my mind you want to keep what has potential to be better. And with that I belive Anderson isn’t going to get any better where Webb has potential.

          6. Its moot point either way we will carry all three. I just don’t see a reason to do an ageing back-ups contact a year before its up. And to cite leadership as the reason. Good talk man, good points. They just don’t sway my criticism.

    1. Webb isn’t on Anderson’s level IMO. Yeah he looks great against 3rd stringers, but Anderson has thrived against proven NFL talent. Also, it is possible that both Cam AND DA can have leadership qualities that benefit the team in the same room without causing conflict. They are friends and have a great working relationship, why not keep a good thing going both for the team and them individually?
