In a sign that the NFL's dead season is almost over, the Carolina Panthers on Thursday made their first transaction since they gave tackle Michael Oher an extension on June 17.
- The Panthers signed Leonard Johnson, a 5-foot-10, 202-pound cornerback. His size and experience point to a guy who has a chance to win a roster spot at nickel, where the Panthers don't have great options.
- Johnson, who grew up outside Tampa, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bucs in 2012. Not only did he stick with him hometown team, but he played in all 16 games for three seasons, compiling five interceptions, 20 pass breakups, and five forced fumbles.
- After twisting an ankle last preseason, Johnson spent most of the year on injured reserved. When the Bucs released him in December, the Patriots pounced and added him for the stretch run. He played in New England's final four regular-season games, but he was inactive during the playoffs.
- To make room for Johnson, the Panthers cut cornerback Shaq Richardson, who was one of six tryout guys signed in May.
