After an offseason spent rebuilding their receiving corps, the Panthers are back in the market for wideouts.
They worked out Stephen Hill on Monday, but the former Jets second-round pick left without a contract. That doesn’t mean the Panthers won’t sign him in the near future, but it’s unlikely they’ll add help before the season opener.
“You’ve got to look at guys and see how they fit you and see if there is potential there,” head coach Ron Rivera said. “We have a ready list, guys we want to sign in case we get into an emergency situation.”
Hill, who is two months younger than Panthers first-round pick Kelvin Benjmain, was cut by the Jets on Saturday after two disappointing seasons. But his 45 catches and four touchdowns look relatively decent compared to former Panthers second-round bust Dwayne Jarrett, who wound up with 35 receptions and one score during his three-plus seasons.
Despite their claims all offseason, the Panthers are still thin at receiver. Hill may be worth taking a flier on, something that may happen after this week, when his contract won’t be guaranteed. Or perhaps the Panthers saw enough to just move on.
The team also worked out receiver Kadron Boone on Monday. The undrafted rookie from LSU was released by the Eagles.
