Just as the Carolina Panthers got one key defensive piece back on the practice field, another is spending his Wednesday watching.

Defensive tackle Star Lotulelei is practicing Wednesday, but linebacker Luke Kuechly isn’t.

It’s Lotulelei’s first practice since he suffered a stress reaction in his surgically repaired foot during the first week of training camp.

Kuechly, who sustained a concussion late in the first half of Sunday’s season-opening win in Jacksonville, is in the NFL’s concussion protocol. It’s impossible to predict if he’ll be cleared to play against the Texans in four days.

Screen Shot 2015-09-16 at 12.24.51 PMKuechly, wearing a blue practice jersey but no pads, walked into practice shortly after it began with head trainer Ryan Vermillion. The two-time Pro Bowler stretched with the team and then followed around the linebackers during drills.

During his three years at Boston College and through 3-plus seasons as a pro, Kuechly has never missed a game.

Running back Jonathan Stewart is also not practicing Wednesday, but he may be getting a vet day. Defensive tackle Dwan Edwards is also working on the side.

Offensive tackle Nate Chandler (knee) and tight end Richie Brockel (shoulder), who sat out the season opener, still aren’t ready to return.

  1. Bill, I’d love for you to get Luke’s comments on his tackling form on the concussion play. Seems like a good teachable moment for all the kids being taught to tackle “heads up.” Even one of the best pros can get caught instinctively lowering his head into an oncoming opponent. It was a scary moment. What did Luke learn from the play that kids can learn too?
