Jared StrichekNews, Week 4: Panthers at BucsLeave a Comment

150927 Panthers v Saints_018

A handful of Carolina Panthers offered tremendous value against the Saints last week (as predicted), but this Sunday’s trip to Tampa may not produce similar results.

Before we take a look at Week 4, kudos to last weekend’s top-3 finishers:

AmericanAndy: 222.42 pts
Jburnside: 218.22 pts
Skipperclt: 216.90 pts

Since BBR’s FREE fantasy football tournament is for Sunday through Monday games, you still have time to get in this week. But, there’s a 100-entry limit, so you don’t have that much time.

Panthers vs Bucs Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Newton Not As Value-Priced This Week

Panthers QB Cam Newton had himself a game against the Saints. He was solid on the ground (7 carries, 33 yards, TD, 4.71 YPC), but he did most of his damage through the air, shredding the Saints’ defense for 315 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

This week, Newton is the sixth-most expensive QB on FantasyDraft ($13,800) — only $300 more than he was last week — and he’s fifth in scoring in most fantasy formats.

Newton’s rushing attempts have varied game-by-game, but his passing attempts have stayed relatively stable. Expect him to attempt at least 30 passes, while adding 10-15 rushes. The Bucs are ranked 9th against the pass and 30th against the run, so there’s a chance we’ll see Newton rattle off a pretty solid stat line if he gets his legs involved.

Spread It Out

The Panthers have run 70 percent of their snaps out of shotgun formations this season, which Tampa Bay has had trouble with. Opposing QBs have a 104.1 rating against the Bucs out of the shotgun. Houston and Jacksonville have been much better against shotgun passers, so Newton’s performance should look more like last week’s than his other two.

No Repeat Performance From Olsen

Panthers TE Greg Olsen destroyed the Saints, hauling in eight of his 11 targets for 135 yards and two scores. Olsen enters this week as the second-most expensive TE on FantasyDraft, only $200 cheaper than Seattle’s Jimmy Graham. But don’t expect a repeat performance from Olsen. Tampa Bay has been awfully stingy against tight ends, allowing only four points per game to opposing TE in most standard formats.

Defense = Wildcard

After two strong performances, the Carolina DST let fantasy owners down by scoring only five points against a Saints offense missing QB Drew Brees. Carolina DST may not be the strongest play this week from a value standpoint. At $6,200, they are the fourth-most expensive defense and there’s no guarantee they’ll put up top-five numbers.

While QB Jameis Winston is still a big unknown, the Bucs’ offense as a whole has gotten progressively better each week. Opposing defenses have scored 17, seven and five fantasy points on them respectively as the season has progressed.

Winston is averaging 2.3 sacks per game, so it’s safe to assume that newly acquired Panthers DE Jared Allen should get to him at least once. But it’s a crapshoot whether or not the Panthers DST will outperform or even live up to its fourth-rated salary.

Tampa Bay Offense

While the Saints did pick up some passing yards last week, I’ll be staying away from all Bucs offensive players on weekly sites. They are too inconsistent and they are facing a top-5 defense.

Fantasy Football Week 4 Sleepers Around The League

With the exception of Redskins RB Matt Jones, our Week 3 sleepers had good days. Now, our top picks for Week 4:

  • Bills RB Karlos Williams

Buffalo’s backup back is our lead candidate for sleeper of the week. With LeSean McCoy likely sidelined, Williams is in line to get a heap of touches. And since the Giants are currently allowing 21 PPG to running backs in most formats, Williams is set up for a potentially big day.

  • Packers WR James Jones

The reasoning behind this is purely psychological — strike some fear in your opponent’s heart when they see “J. Jones” on your roster. Just kidding … somewhat.

Jones is a fantasy zombie. After years of irrelevance, he’s returned to glory as Aaron Rodgers’ second-favorite target. At $10,500, Jones is a decent-priced alternative to receivers like DeAndre Hopkins or Larry Fitzgerald. Jones led all Packers in receptions last week and figures to get even more playing time with Davante Adams injured. San Francisco’s DST is 27th against opposing WRs, so Jones should be in line for a solid performance at a relatively cheap price.

  • Raiders QB Derek Carr

After a strong performance against an uninspired Browns’ defense, Carr finds himself firmly planted in our sleeper list. He has the seventh-highest PPG of all QBs, yet he’s the 19th-most expensive QB. Carr faces a retooling Chicago defense that just traded starters DE Jared Allen and LB Jon Bostic while also waiving S Brock Vereen. All signs point to Carr having a lights-out day.

  • Bills TE Charles Clay

Clay is a midrange sleeper in daily leagues and a low-risk pickup in standard leagues. Buffalo is facing a Giants defense that is ranked third against opposing TEs, and Clay and Bills QB Tyrod Taylor were in-sync last week.

We are curious, who are your Fantasy Football sleeper picks for week 4? Comment below.
