Would Dave Gettleman Play the Patriots’ Game?

Dave Gettleman can steal Tyler Gaffney back. It’s unlikely the Panthers’ general manager would do it, but he could regain his former sixth-round pick by turning the tables on the PatriotsIMG_2369.According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, New England waived/injured Gaffney on Wednesday. An undisclosed injury has kept the running back out of practice since the start of training camp, and the Patriots plan to put him on injured reserve. First, he’ll have to clear waivers.Of course, that’s how the Panthers lost him last summer. Gettleman intended to stash the rookie on IR after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in late July. But the Patriots swooped in, ignoring a largely followed unwritten rule, and snagged Gaffney off waivers.“The chances of it happening are slim, but we made what we thought was the best decision at the time for the Carolina Panthers,” Gettleman said at the time.“We’re in a competitive business. We’re all looking to improve. They made a business decision.”Since Gaffney was on the roster bubble in New England, and Bill Belichick is willing to risk losing him in the same way he picked up him up, it looks like Gettleman didn’t lose the NFL’s next great running back last summer. But the Panthers could get another look at their draft pick now … if that’s how they wanted to do business.[vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html]

  1. If G-mam doesn’t do it, then he’s admitting to 2 mistakes, cutting Gaffney, and drafting him in the first place (pick #204, in the 6th round, passing up CB Travis Carrie, OLB Brandon Watts, and WR Jeff Janis). I say take the risk and go for it, even if he has to spend the year on IR.

Tyler Gaffney (5’11 1/2″, 220, 30 1/4″ arms, and 9″ hands) is bigger than Cameron Artis-Payne (5’9 3/4″, 212, 29 5/8″ arms, and 8 7/8″ hands), and faster as well, with an above average (these grades are from a 10 year study of RB’s Combine or Pro Day workout numbers) 4.49-40 (a below average 4.53-40 for CAP), an above average 1.53-10 (CAP a very below average 1.61-10), a top 10% 6.78-3 cone (CAP a below average 7.13-3 cone), and an above average 4.18-20 yard shuttle (CAP an average 4.25).
