If you’re worried about the first-quarter performances by quarterback Cam Newton and the Panthers’ first-team offense this preseason, at least there’s this: Newton has been more productive than 4-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.
Of course, the Patriots have little reason to play their starter much since Brady’s regular-season suspension means he won’t play until mid-October. But he is expected to see an uptick in snaps Friday night in Charlotte.
Because we often overanalyze preseason results, here’s how Newton and Brady compare through two games:

Newton was hurt by drops against the Dolphins while Brady hasn’t had receivers Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell or tight end Rob Gronkowski. So it’s likely both quarterbacks could be OK despite their pedestrian preseason starts.
This is the second straight year the Panthers and Patriots have met in the third preseason game, which most NFL teams use as a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the regular year.
Last August, Brady played most of the first half, going 17-of-21 for 204 yds and two touchdowns. Newton went 8-of-12 for 88 yards and cracked a rib on a second-quarter scramble. What many forget is, after coming out for one snap, Newton went back in for 10 more plays despite the injury that eventually kept him out of the season opener in Tampa Bay.
When Brady’s done Friday, he’ll make way for Jimmy Garoppolo, who’s set to fill in during Brady’s suspension. Through his first two appearances this preseason, the Patriots’ backup is 48-of-63 for 428 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.[line][vc_raw_html]
