Quotes to Note From Sunday at Panthers’ Training Camp

Additional comments from media sessions at Carolina Panthers' training camp.

Head coach Ron Rivera

On the development of first-round DT Vernon Butler:

"It most certainly will be a work in progress. When you watch him, the thing I’d like to see him do is finish. By that I mean you’ll watch him get into certain positions during the play and he may be in a positive position, but he’s got to learn to finish that position off. Just because you’ve got a step on your guy doesn’t mean you’ve won. That’s what he has to learn."

Center Ryan Kalil

On "The Rookie Handbook," which Kalil co-wrote with former Panthers Jordan Gross and Geoff Hangartner:

"It's a book a long time in the making. Mostly because we're not writers. It's a really hard job you guys have. I didn't realize how hard that was. No ghost writers, we did it ourselves. That doesn't necessarily meant that the quality is any good, but at least if it sucks it's because of us."

On why the book includes anecdotes about NFL drug testing procedures:

"I don’t think a lot of people realize how awkward that whole scenario is with some random stranger coming to your house, and you having to explain to your children, if you have children, why you have to go in the bathroom with a strange man."

On teaming with Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin to produce an upcoming sequel of The Rocketeer:

"We knew Disney was trying to figure out what to do with it, so we found some talented writers and they figured out a really exciting take into the story and we took it to Disney and they liked it. They liked it a lot."

On Mortal Media, his new production company:

"Some guys get into production, other guys create really terrible clothing ensembles. But in the production side, I think Cam's show is pretty awesome. I think he's done a great job with that show, so I'll give him that."

LB Thomas Davis

On his back-and-forth with Newton during practice:

"He's talking trash and we're having fun doing it. That's what it's all about when you play this game. You can't come to practice or go to work and be miserable with what you're doing. You've got to have fun and you've got to love what you do."

On Newton's goal of not throwing an interception to Davis or LB Luke Kuechly during training camp:

"If that’s his goal he’s doing a great job of staying away from us and going to Shaq [Thompson], and we see how that’s working out, right? [Thompson has had an interception] days in a row."
