Quotes to Note: Dave Gettleman, Ron Rivera Wrap Up Draft

RE: On drafting linebacker David MayoRon Rivera: “He’ll be able to play the strong-side and the mike linebacker for us. Again, we talked about you can only keep so many guys active on Sundays. A guy like this with that kind of position flexibility is something you want to consider, and based on the way he plays, he’s what we call a knock-back tackler. When he hits a guy, he has the ability to knock guys back. He’s a downhill player. He plays with his hands very well, and he has good vision. I think what you like about him when you watch him is he is a high-impact player, and that equates very nicely to special teams as well. Again, position value, position flexibility, and special teams.”RE: If Cameron Artis-Payne will share the workload with running backs Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy WhittakerRR: “I think it’s a combination. When you look at the young man’s physical traits, he’s a little more stout than Fozzy. Fozzy is a little bit more of an elusive style runner. This young man is a between-a-tackle type runner who does slash a little bit with good quickness to bounce the ball outside. He is a bowling ball. You watch him go inside the piles and really move people. He is low to the ground, he has great leverage. He’ll fit right in with our short running backs. He’s built a lot like them. So, I think he’ll have a good opportunity to come in and take some of those carries off of Jonathan if need be, and Fozzy as well. I think it’s going to be a combination of our running backs because of the styles they have.”RE: On taking two linebackers in the draft this yearDave Gettleman: “One of the things we talked about in that post-season presser was speed. We talked about that, and we’re addressing it … There was a coaching phrase I saw a million years ago when I was a high school coach that said, ‘speed makes geniuses of us all.’ Both of these kids, obviously Shaq [Thompson] and David, and David can run. It’s all part of it.”RE: How many first round grades the team had in the entire draftDG: “Including the 3-4 [defense] guys, 18 or 20? 17? High teens. Somewhere in there. Again, it gets muddled because of the 3-4 guys.”RE: If this draft class helps them matchup better with the best teams in the NFCRR: “It goes back to why do you target a Shaq Thompson? Well, because you have a guy that can play the linebacking position and at the same time be a matchup for the tight end. It gives you flexibility because now a team, if they’re going to sit there and move the tight ends from one side to the other, now you have guys who can go out and cover those guys. And his speed. He can run. You’ve got three linebackers that can run. When you put those three linebackers on the field at the same time, you create a different animal. If you want to go more physical, you can put another combination of linebackers on the field. So there are some matchup things we can do because of the bodies we have now in our linebacking corps.”In the receiving corps, now you sit back and say OK, you’ve got Kelvin [Benjamin] on one side, you’ve got Devin [Funchess] on the other side. Now you’ve got Corey Brown. You’ve got different combinations of receivers. You create that type of difficulty because now people have to match up with your three different types of wide receivers. Then you’ve got tight ends. How are you going to match up with all those different types of guys? So some of those things we did with that in mind.”RE: Regrets from this draftDG: “I don’t have any. I have none. Like I said to you guys last time, I want to see the GM who walks in to a post-draft presser and says ‘What a lousy draft this was!’ No, I love all five picks. All these guys are legitimate NFL talents and where we got them I’m thrilled we got them all. I feel right now we’re better. Absolutely we’re better. And what this does, this just creates competition. You can’t have enough competition at every position, and we’re getting there. We’re at the point now where we can honestly look at the depth chart, and everybody’s got to work.”

Every news article I read I can be confident to see a “salty” comment left by you. I just joined so maybe your a troll and I shouldn’t feed you. We will see.

This draft is definitely questionable. I think we gotta wait and see what this class does. Gman will either look like a genius or his reputation will tumble.
This was a very important draft for us since we’re so close and all we can do is wait and C.

He loved it last year and the year before too. Not seeing your logic here. He has had a good track record the past two drafts so why shouldn’t he be confident with his process?
