Quotes to Note: Ron Rivera on NFL Officiating

Highlights from Friday morning's media session with Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

Did you think the face mask call in last night's Packers/Lions game was correct?

"If you go by the rules, he hit the face mask. The thumb and the forefinger caught the mask and turned the head. That should have been enough ... Believe me, I'd be screaming if it was against us that he didn't. But when you look at it, as slight as it was, that's all it takes. I know a lot has been made about the rules in the league, but people have to understand the rules are in place for a reason. I'm not a little bit offsides. I'm offsides. I didn't just grab the face mask a little. I grabbed it. There's no interpretation for a little bit or a lot. If it happens, it happens. It's hard on the referees. They have to make a split-second decision."

What about Bill Belichick's thought that all plays should be reviewable?

"I'm beginning to get to that point. There should be a certain number, just like we have a set number of challenges. Maybe that's what you do. But I think it's something the competition committee and the league is most certainly going to look at ... I like the fact that we play games right around three hours. I'd hate to see this turn into a four-hour game. I think there's a balance somewhere and hopefully we'll get to it."

Should officials be full-time?

"It's not up to me, but I would like to [see that]. Everybody else is full-time. It's a very difficult job, and I think if you train at it, you work at it. Even if you did it year round, there's things that they could find for these guys to do year round to perfect their craft."

So do you agree with the narrative that officiating has gotten worse or is it just that television technology has improved?

"The high-def has really changed the way people look at things. It even changes the way we as coaches look at things, the way we as coaches are viewed by a lot of people, the way the referees are viewed by a lot of people and the players are viewed by a lot of people. The high-def, you can't escape it. You've got six, seven cameras. You've got camera phones getting things on the field and people nitpicking. In real time it's different, it's hard to see it ... One of the things that I'm really appreciative is when I ask a referee a question, and he gives me an explanation that I can't argue, then I move on. Some I don't agree with, but as long as there's communication I think we can move on with it."
