Philly Brown WR 5 7% 14 56%
Brian Folkerts C 2 3% 8 32%

  • Ryan Kalil missed two plays because of an issue with his shoulder pads.
  • Fernando Velasco started at right guard, but rookie Trai Turner still had a chance to get his feet wet.
  • Lots of shuffling on the line, which helped it hold up well in the humid conditions.
  • Ed Dickson got 24 snaps at tight end, but he was never targeted. Curious how often he was used as a blocker vs. as a receiver.

Kawann Short DT 29 52% 2 8%
Roman Harper S 19 34% 2 8%
A.J. Klein LB 14 25% 11 44%
Wes Horton DE 13 23% 1 4%
Colin Cole DT 11 20%
Mario Addison DE 10 18% 11 44%
Chase Blackburn LB 2 4% 11 44%
Colin Jones S 19 76%
Ben Jacobs LB 17 68%
Jason Williams LB 16 64%
Brad Nortman P 11 44%
J.J. Jansen LS 11 44%
Fozzy Whittaker RB 11 44%
Josh Norman CB 10 40%
Graham Gano K 9 36%

  • For as humid as it was, and considering Mario Addison and Wes Horton are solid backups, Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson played a lot. Good to see Johnson get through the whole game without retweaking his hamstring.
  • The rotation was much more apparent at defensive tackle, and again, while Colin Cole starts, Kawann Short gets more time.
  • Will probably continue to bring this up, but here’s another reminder of how much more important nickel is than the third linebacker in the Panthers defense. Bené Benwikere played 40 snaps, compared to 16 for the A.J. Klein/Chase Blackburn combo.
  • Charles Godfrey is listed as a cornerback, but he played plenty at strong safety in place of Roman Harper whose 19 snaps are somewhat surprising low.
  • Not sure what all the hubbub was about Thomas DeCoud as he only missed three snaps.

BlackBlueReview Why do you think Roman Harper played so little? Was it humidity or lack of preseason practice or turf toe or all of them?

  • billvoth

appgrad22 likely all. will probably ask Ron about it here in about 15 mins.

  • Mainone

It appears that Coach Rivera was using this gme as a conditioning exercise for his DE’s. Almost backfired on him in the fourth quarter.  Risky Business …..

billvoth appgrad22 It’s probably because Harper can’t cover any more, and is just used on sure rushing downs.

The Panthers should try to sign (to reasonable contract, around $1.5 million) FA S Chris Clemons (6’1″, 214, 28 years old), who’s started for the Dolphins for the last several years. Clemons has great speed, as shown by his 2009 Combine “official” 4.41-40 (“unofficially” a 4.33-40), and 1.44-10 yard split.

  • RLeeEarl

The Panthers are short handed at CB (carrying only 4 CB’s, not counting S/CB Charles Godfrey), with both starters playing every down. They need to upgrade their CB depth and speed (starter White – a Pro Day 4.59-40 with a 1.70-10, backups Berwikere – a 4.63-40 with a 1.63-10, and Norman – a 4.66-40 with a 1.52-10) at CB, if they want to go very far in the playoffs.

The Panthers should probably consider signing FA CB/S Tommie Campbell (6’2 7/8″, 202, and 26 years old), who ran a Pro Day 4.31-40 in 2011. His height and speed could be a big advantage in guarding the divisions big WR’s. The Titans tried to give Campbell a starting CB job the last couple of seasons, but he couldn’t hold it (Verner held the job, and signed a big contract with the Bucs this offseason), and was a final roster cut by the Titans this season.
