  • The big mover this week was Philly Brown, who played 52 offensive snaps after combining for eight his first two weeks. Starting in place of Jerricho Cotchery, the rookie was certainly productive as well, hauling in seven of his nine targets for 66 yards.
  • Like Cotchery, Jason Avant tweaked a hamstring last week. Not sure if that’s why he played half the amount Brown did, but it’s still interesting to see.
  • Fernando Velasco started for the third straight week, but unlike the previous games, he didn’t make way for Trai Turner after the second series. Velasco played a series longer before the rotation began, and Turner didn’t remain in the rest of the way like he did against the Lions.
  • Three weeks in and the two-tight end passing offense we saw this summer so far appears to be a mirage. Ed Dickson saw his only target last week.
  • Brenton Bersin played 15 more snaps on offense and six more on special teams than he did against the Lions. After Brown’s costly fumble, Bersin may see some looks as a return man this week.

  • Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly each racked up a team-high 1,078 snaps last season. The few plays they missed were when games were out of hand late. It’s a shame that run will likely end now for Davis, but the good news is his current injury is not to his surgically-repaired knee.
  • Ron Rivera talked last week about getting Charles Johnson more rest after he played nearly 90% of snaps the first two weeks. That number dropped to 69% against the Steelers, which is closer to a more ideal number. His production isn’t there as far as flashy numbers are concerned, but with Greg Hardy sidelined, Johnson’s getting the bulk of the attention paid to Carolina’s ends.
  • Mario Addison’s production (3.5 sacks, 5 tackles) is tremendous considering he’s still in a limited role. His body type may not allow the Panthers to put him in there for a starter’s amount of plays.
  • It’s not surprising the Steelers would force the Panthers to play more base defense. A.J. Klein and Chase Blackburn played 43 snaps after combining for 16 during each of the first two games.
  • Charles Godfrey’s time continues to fluctuate. Week 1 — 40 snaps, Week 2 — 7 snaps, Week 3 — 32 snaps.
  • Kony Ealy has been in for 55 plays his first two games, but he’s totaled just on tackle.
  • Josh Norman saw a handful of plays again. It will be interesting to see if and how much he gets in against the Ravens. If anyone in the Panthers’ defensive backfield is susceptible to Steve Smith’s trash-talking, it’s Norman.
