Nearly six months since entering the NFL’s concussion protocol, Michael Oher is still in it. But the Carolina Panthers are still hoping he can return to play right tackle in 2017.
According to general manager Dave Gettleman, Oher “has been working his fanny off” this offseason.
“He’s doing NFL workouts. He’s fully engaged in that weight room sweating his butt off,” Gettleman said Friday. “He looks great, he sounds great.”
Gettleman wouldn’t say if the Panthers are actively testing Oher to get out of the protocol right now. And when asked if he’s optimistic Oher will eventually be cleared, Gettleman said:
“Like I told you, he’s doing NFL workouts right now. His workouts right now are not for the faint of heart. He’s down there grunting like everybody else.”
Oher, who was suddenly placed into the protocol in late September, sat out the Panthers’ final 13 games.
