Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

What They’re Saying: Media Reacts to Josh Norman News

Scott Hamilton, Winston-Salem Journal:

Josh Norman isn’t greedy — he’s delusional. Unfortunately for the soon-to-be-former Carolina Panther, the long-term deal he’s seeking won’t come with a much-needed dose of reality.

Mike Garafolo, FOX Sports:

He might very well get a deal Gettleman feels is higher than his value as a 28-year-old corner on a team that plans to pay its defensive linemen (Star Lotulelei, Kawann Short and Super Bowl 50 breakout star Kony Ealy) some big money in the next few years.

If so, Gettleman won't have any regrets.

Mark Maske, Washington Post:

Gettleman has a reputation within the league for being strong-willed and unpredictable. He certainly deserves credit for turning the Panthers into a Super Bowl team.

But that doesn’t put him and his organization above being questioned. Norman might not be the league’s best cornerback, but few, if any, cornerbacks played the position better last season than Norman did. Cornerbacks like him are not easily found, and they are an oh-so-valuable commodity in today’s pass-happy NFL.

David Newton, ESPN.com:

In all likelihood, Gettleman will snag another defensive end or tackle to create the pressure that makes average corners look good. Whatever he decides, he won't deal with the potential distraction that Norman's situation could have created.

Scott Fowler, Charlotte Observer:

At first glance, I don’t like it. The Panthers will have to prove to me that this is going to work, because you rarely get better as a football team by letting one of your best players leave with no compensation. General manager Dave Gettleman has said many times he is not in the business of developing young stars just so they can go play for other teams, but that’s what is happening here.

Mike Florio, Pro Football Talk:

If he signs with another team before May 12, the signing counts toward the compensatory draft pick formula for 2017. While the ultimate compensation is based on a complex combination of free agency losses and gains, losing a key player on the right side of 30 will go a long way toward getting the Panthers the crown jewel of the compensatory draft process: An extra pick at the back end of round three.

Will Brinson, CBS Sports:

Carolina's decision to dump Norman wasn't about him not being a good player. He's a great cornerback. But a set of organizational philosophies (pass rush trumps the secondary) and differences in the value of Norman on a one-year contract vs. a long-term deal caused the separation.

Now Norman is on the market and he should see plenty of action and see it quickly.

Ryan O'Halloran, The Florida-Times Union:

The Jaguars are a natural fit for Norman because they remain without a no-doubt No. 1 cover corner and have the resources to pay him.

The Jaguars are $52.5 million under the cap, more than every team except San Francisco, meaning they could easily construct a contract averaging $15 million per year, eclipsing the Jets’ Darrelle Revis ($14.024 million), Arizona’s Patrick Peterson ($14.01 million) and Seattle’s Richard Sherman ($14 million).

Matt Maiocco, CSN Bay Area:

The 49ers, coming off a 5-11 season, are owners of the No. 7 overall pick. But the 49ers have $52.6 million in cap space, according to the NFL Players Association. The 49ers are one of the teams in the league that can offer Norman a big contract.

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com:

"Now you're going to have to replace a part, and you're not going to get a player that's as good as Josh Norman. If I'm going to look at a corner there, I would say William Jackson is the best fit ... he's got that size, he's got great ball skills, ran a lot faster (at the NFL Scouting Combine) than I expected him to."

Maybe Josh will sign up with his buddy and the Giants…lol
This doesn’t look good for a team that wasn’t set in a great way at CB to start with. Nobody knows if Bene will return to form by start of season and even if he does he’s not that good. There’s little left in FA and it’s rare to draft a rookie with starting talent.
Panther Power Ranking just dropped. The Panthers are not only in a pass happy league but all their divisional opponents are strong passing teams.
