WATCH: Michael Irvin Passionately Argues That Luke Kuechly > J.J. Watt

Shortly after Texans' defensive end J.J. Watt landed at No. 3 overall as the top-ranked defender on the "Top 100 Players of 2016" list Wednesday night, Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin disputed the ranking.

Irvin loudly told NFL Network colleagues, Ike Taylor and Eric Davis, that he believes Panthers' linebacker Luke Kuechly β€” who wound up No. 7 overall β€” is the best defensive player in the league.

Simple argument. The best player on a specific side of a ball should in fact be able to make their team play better as a unit. I’d argue Watt is the absolute best at his position. But this isn’t an individual contest. Ant the easiest fact to cite as to who makes their team better is draft spots. JJ was on a team that picked first overall. Luke has never been on a team that picked in the top ten. Which is even more impressive considering the cap situations for those teams at the times.

And Luke was drafted #9 (with the #1 pick acquired the year prior, Houston picked #20 the year prior with Watt taken at #11). They go from a bottom defense to #10 when Luke is a rookie. You can see a similar change with Watt, although the Texans offense had a higher scoring rank than ours with Cam. Irving is right, if you’d draft Kuechly over Watt then the argument is already over lol. Watt may be the best at his position (or the best DL in general), but his position doesn’t necessarily have as much responsibility that Luke has (being the best) at LB.
