Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

How We Misread Dave Gettleman’s “Dollar Store” Comment

One of Dave Gettleman’s now-famous lines could soon turn into something infamous. But that’s not necessarily his fault. When asked in January about the level of cash he’d be willing to spend on offseason improvements, the Carolina Panthers general manager replied: “Last year we were shopping in the dollar store. This year we may be able to move up in class a little bit.”Since then, we – both media and fans – have taken that line and run with it. What we too quickly forgot was Gettleman’s next line: “I said we’re going to move up in class. I didn’t say we’re going to go out and spend big money on a player.”While that was a clear indication the Panthers wouldn’t be players for the Jeremy Maclin’s and Bryan Bulaga’s of this free agent class, what’s now become clear is “big money” also included the next tier.According to league sources with knowledge of the teams’ plans, the Panthers accomplished much of what they wanted before free agency kicked off Tuesday afternoon. They currently have no intentions to sign second wave unrestricted free agents, so, sources say, potential targets like Cecil Shorts, or the SnapChat-fueled rumor of Derrick Morgan aren’t options. The Panthers wrapped up their pre-free agency shopping Tuesday when they gave tight Ed Dickson and defensive tackle Dwan Edwards multi-year deals. In all, they’ve made 12 signings the past month, including deals with nine of their own and an extension for tight end Greg Olsen. Last year, they watched many of their guys go elsewhere, so keeping who they wanted is a step forward. But there’s no question there are still holes on the roster. Ted Ginn ticks off the speedy wideout and returner boxes, but the Panthers are still without a No. 2 receiver. Michael Oher could fit in as a fine stopgap, but they still need at least one tackle who could be the future on the left side. Each of those worries could be taken care of in a draft loaded at both positions, but that still leaves needs at cornerback, defensive end, safety and running back. That’s not much of an improvement from the end of last season, so Gettleman has to nail the draft again to make this work. The Panthers could consider some of the more well-known free agent names, if they become values in later waves of free agency. But more likely, they’ll search for potential bargains like Packers receiver Jarrett Boykin. Moves like that won’t be exciting, but Gettleman didn’t say he was staying out of the dollar store. The “move up in class” was apparently getting a dozen deals done by the start of free agency, seven more than they made last year, and nine more than in 2013. It was re-signing nine of their own, and bringing in two more at positions of need.It may not be the kind of shopping many hoped for, and there’s still work to be done, but the Panthers got what they wanted.

I didn’t think we would do a high $ splash with Cam’s contract still looming and our desire to have long term players locked in for a good run over the next few years.

Love this article because I think everyone was thinking the same thing, as you pointed out. Only you know how reliable your source is, but I have to think that there are several players that are still available that are ‘Target’ type players that maybe he’s just doing his standard ‘sitting back and letting the market cool’ thing. Based on what I’ve seen, we had about $16 million under the cap going into FA. According to Joe Person, he likes to keep about $5-7 million available to spend during the season, and it will require about $5 million to sign our draft picks. That leaves about $4-6 million available to sign players, which I’m guessing he’s spent already. So I guess the biggest looming question is, when does he extend/restructure Johnson’s contract? Sounds to me like the only way left to get any more additional room. Am I off base with that logic?

    • Bill Voth

Nah, you’re on the right track. Yes, he wants to have a nest egg around $7 mil during the season. You can consider that their floor, with $20-$25 mil as their ideal ceiling.

I understand the logic of this article, I just don’t want to see DG get caught up in a FA that is past their respective prime like DeCoud and Cason, for example. Those were terrible signings and the whole of fandom and the experts knew that as well and regardless if it’s not much, they still cost us dead money. I really would have rather had DG find a CB in free agency like Buster Skrine (I know he’s gone already) or Walter Thurmond (who is also aready signed). Right now, IMO, we need to focus on the O-line and the other outside corner opposite Josh Norman. We can find a compliment to KB in the draft I’m sure.

I am not so sure DE is a high priority at this point. Alexander, Ealy, Addison, Johnson, and Horton should be able to more than handle the duties.

    • Panthers/Truth

Sacks were down by 1/3rd last season (from 60 to 40 without Hardy)

      • stoneman

Without hardy, alexander, and johnson playing through injury

I think people are quick to forget about the draft. We have done very well for ourselves in the draft. Last year we got Ealy to prepare for life without Hard, and of course Benji. We have done great with Gentleman in the draft. It is loaded this year with what we need most. Tackles. Last year Cam couldn’t do anything behind that line and our running backs struggled too. Having good linemen on BOTH sides of the ball makes a lot of our problems less severe. As for the secondary those young kids did very well at the end of last year. Two years ago nobody gave or secondary a chance and they did just enough to. Got to resign Cam and Luke. Patience

    • Anthony McAlexander

      Hardy*

    • Teresa Stone

And Ealy is no where near there.

      • Anthony McAlexander

Neither was Hardy after his first year. Hardy had one great season yes, but it took him awhile to get there. Ealy can play inside and out like Hardy and give him time and he will develop also. Can’t judge off a rookie year, or if you do it is not very smart.

        • Teresa Stone

If he does, we will just hand him off to another team. Truth be told, they never intended on giving Hardy a contract anyway. DG is a cheapskate

          • Anthony McAlexander

That is what you want when our last GM threw money at anybody willing to take it. Need an example look at Charles Johnsons contact. DG has not even got to have a real offseason to work with. Just cleaning up our pocket book in between seasons to prep for Cam and Luke. I would take dollar store to make sure we kept those two.

          • Teresa Stone

He has already renegotiated Johnston’s contract once. If he is getting rid of Hardy, he better keep some veterans! I am sick of this Marty crap. Marty brought us some damn good players in his tenure. Lest you forget.

          • Anthony McAlexander

Not saying he didn’t. But the contacts he brought them in on were unwise. Charles Johnson is good but not 20 mil a year plus good. Double trouble was Good not great but good. If they could have BOTH been healthy the whole time it would have been better. DG brought the players that got us back to back NFC south titles and trips to the playoffs lest YOU forget. So before you gripe and moan realize he just gave you something or organization has NEVER done.

          • Teresa Stone

Don’t be ridiculous! Dave Gettleman didn’t get that last NFC championship for the Panthers! The NFC South tanking did that! Had we been in any other conference we would have never made It with that sorry record!

          • ECU82

            yes, $13.1mil is cheap.

    • Teresa Stone

Won’t matter if we don’t draft them, and they will just be rookies.

“One of Dave Gettleman’s now-famous lines could soon turn into something infamous. But that’s not necessarily his fault.” Nothing’s ever Gettleman’s fault. He single-handedly dismantled a 12-4 team, but it’s not his fault. He gave Steve Smith $5m to go away, only to have him get 1k yards, in the most disrespectful manner; but it’s not his fault. He gave away last year’d 6th rd pick to NE, for free, but it’s not his fault. He brought back Ted Ginn after letting him walk, but it’s not his fault.

Then he belittles the same bad/old free agents he brought in last year by calling them “Dollar Store ” buys. The guy has no clue on how to deal with people. Then he makes no move to get Cobb or Maclin or any other help for Cam, while Luck and others get weapons everywhere. This is it for Gettleman. Put up or shut up. This is his make or break year.

    • Teresa Stone

      Agreed!

    • Andy Theboss

I’m not sure if this comment is a troll but Ima give it my time anyways…
      “Dismantled a 12-4 team….”
Do you not consider the inherited salary cap situation. Most of that dismantling came because we didn’t have the money to keep people.
“This guy has no idea how to deal with people”
I will concede that the Steve Smith situation wasn’t handled ideally and not sending someone to DW’s mom funeral… regretable but not intentional. Cotchery was the only addition worth more than 1M/per so I’m pretty sure there shouldn’t be any hurt feelings amongst last years FA’s
So if things had gone your way this offseason we wouldn’t have brought Ginn back(for half the cost of last year), not brought in any secondary depth and the ONLY move we would have made was to overpay a reciever like Maclin or Cobb. I say ONLY because it would have taken ALL our cap space to fill a need that should be readily available at the draft…???

G-man can still shop at the dollar store, only the top 51 contracts count against the salary cap, so he can continue to sign minimum contract players, with little or no guaranteed money, and here are a couple.

Bengals S/OLB Taylor Mays (6’3 1/8″, 230, 34″ arms, and 10 1/8″ hands, an “official” Combine 4.42-40, “unoffical” 40 times of 4.24, 4.31, and 4.34, with a 1.45-10, and a 41″ vertical) could be a natural fit at the 3rd LB spot, as a combo OLB/nickle DB, so they could switch from a 4-3 to a 4-2-5 without substituting players, or he could just be a great backup for Thomas Davis. He’s a 5 year veteran, and still only 27, with great speed, and leaping ability, who will probably sign for around the veteran minimum.

Jaguars CB/S Tommie Campbell (6’2 7/8″, 200, and a Pro Day 4.31-40) almost won a starting CB job with the Titans in 2012 and 2013, and can probably be signed for the veteran minimum. He would bring needed speed to the secondary and special teams, but even if he didn’t make the roster, he would push the other DB’s in training camp to get better.

I don’t want his old ass. I much rather have Denarius Moore from Oakland that’s 26 with blazing speed, a deep threat and a playmaker. Smh
