Notes and Nuggets From Tuesday’s Panthers’ Training Camp Practice

HEALTH WATCH

  • DT Chas Alecxih was waived/injured after he suffered a season-ending knee injury in Sunday's practice.

  • WR Tobais Palmer was waived/injured with a lingering Achilles injury. The former NC State wideout practiced just three times this camp.

  • S Dean Marlowe sat out with a sore hamstring. His status for Thursday's preseason opener in Baltimore is unclear.

  • P Mike Scifres didn't participate. According to coach Ron Rivera, Scifres was feeling some soreness in his surgically repaired knee. If he's not better by Thursday, it'll be the Swayze Waters show Thursday night.

  • LB Ben Jacobs was walking around Wofford with a boot on his right foot. The special teams' ace injured his ankle late in Friday night's Fan Fest.

  • DE Rakim Cox (back) and DE Larry Webster (hamstring) remained out.

TOP PLAY

Because his role is much more vital in the regular-season than in training camp, RB Jonathan Stewart hasn't seen many reps during team drills. But he gave CB James Bradberry a preview of what it's like to tackle a pro.

The rookie was left reaching for a ghost after Stewart faked like he was going to turn a run inside. He instead bounced outside, drawing cheers from his teammates on offense.

PLAYER NOTES

  • QB Cam Newton, who's expected to play no more than a quarter against the Ravens, ceded a bunch of the day's work to backups Derek Anderson and Joe Webb.

  • WR Miles Shuler did a good job creating separation to catch a deep ball against CB Zack Sanchez in 1-on-1s. Shuler later added a short touchdown catch from Anderson in a 2-minute drill.

  • WR Avius Capers had his second straight solid practice. The Charlotte native isn't in position to earn a roster spot, but a big showing in the preseason could put in him play for a role on the practice squad.

  • TE Braxton Deaver had another day with multiple receptions in team drills. If the Panthers decide to carry four TEs, a good battle is setting up between Deaver and Beau Sandland for the final spot.

  • TE Eric Wallace made his first notable play of camp. The former Aussie Rules player slipped past LB Jeremy Cash to haul in a pass during 7-on-7s.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

The Panthers signed DE Tom Lally, who was one of four players in for a tryout on Monday. Lally also had a tryout during rookie minicamp in May.

The knock on Lally is his height, but at 6-foot-1, he was the 2015 D3Football.com National Defensive Player of the Year at Mt. Union College.

"He plays with great leverage," Rivera said. "He's got natural leverage – [because he's] short. But we think he can come out and do good things for us."

The Panthers are leaving their 90th spot open ... for now.

"Some things will happen probably in the next day or two," Rivera said."

Many fans may not be intrigued by RB Fozzy Whittaker, but the Panthers remain interested in seeing what he can do if he remains healthy. So Rivera's response when asked about the No. 2 RB spot was confirmation more than anything else:

"Truthfully, our second running back is a combination of Michael Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker. The guy that we have to find out about is Cameron Artis-Payne and Brandon Wegher."

Fans may have also seen enough of WR Brenton Bersin, but he remains very much in the hunt for a roster spot.

Usually sure-handed, Bersin's dropped more passes than usual this camp, including a pair on Tuesday. But he had company from two others he's competing with. Damiere Byrd had a rare drop, and Kevin Norwood failed to finish what could have been a couple big connections.

"This goes back to these being the dog days," Rivera said. "You're not as fresh as you'd like to be, and hopefully with the break they're going to get between now and the time we play, these guys will get their legs back under them and they should be fresh and ready to roll."
