Because his role is much more vital in the regular-season than in training camp, RB Jonathan Stewart hasn't seen many reps during team drills. But he gave CB James Bradberry a preview of what it's like to tackle a pro.
The rookie was left reaching for a ghost after Stewart faked like he was going to turn a run inside. He instead bounced outside, drawing cheers from his teammates on offense.
The Panthers signed DE Tom Lally, who was one of four players in for a tryout on Monday. Lally also had a tryout during rookie minicamp in May.
The knock on Lally is his height, but at 6-foot-1, he was the 2015 D3Football.com National Defensive Player of the Year at Mt. Union College.
"He plays with great leverage," Rivera said. "He's got natural leverage – [because he's] short. But we think he can come out and do good things for us."
The Panthers are leaving their 90th spot open ... for now.
"Some things will happen probably in the next day or two," Rivera said."
Many fans may not be intrigued by RB Fozzy Whittaker, but the Panthers remain interested in seeing what he can do if he remains healthy. So Rivera's response when asked about the No. 2 RB spot was confirmation more than anything else:
"Truthfully, our second running back is a combination of Michael Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker. The guy that we have to find out about is Cameron Artis-Payne and Brandon Wegher."
Fans may have also seen enough of WR Brenton Bersin, but he remains very much in the hunt for a roster spot.
Usually sure-handed, Bersin's dropped more passes than usual this camp, including a pair on Tuesday. But he had company from two others he's competing with. Damiere Byrd had a rare drop, and Kevin Norwood failed to finish what could have been a couple big connections.
"This goes back to these being the dog days," Rivera said. "You're not as fresh as you'd like to be, and hopefully with the break they're going to get between now and the time we play, these guys will get their legs back under them and they should be fresh and ready to roll."
