After a few uncharacteristic drops at training camp, Bersin brought back his sure hands Thursday night. He caught five of his six targets, with three of those coming on third down. Many fans have seen enough of Bersin in Carolina, but I was told before the game that while he's not yet assured of a roster spot, he's in pretty good shape. It's also worth noting he lined up in the slot during the Panthers' 14-play opening drive, ahead of Philly Brown.
It's not just that the Panthers remain confident in their incumbent starter after the Super Bowl. Offensive line coach Ray Brown revealed in June that Williams still has a ways to go as a pass blocker. That was clear on the first snap after Williams replaced Michael Oher at left tackle for the Panthers' second series. Williams was beaten on a speed rush by outside linebacker Za'Darius Smith, who strip-sacked quarterback Derek Anderson. That Williams isn't a complete player in his second season isn't an indictment, but it's a reminder why he's not yet a starter like many believe he should be.
The NFL said they're going to start penalizing teams for coaches and players that enter the field of play in 2016, and that point of emphasis brought back a 95-yard interception return by linebacker A.J. Klein. Celebrating quarterback Cam Newton was flagged for coming out on the field during Klein's return. At least it'll be a good teaching moment for coach Ron Rivera.
