How Many Series Will Cam Newton Play?
Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera hinted this week that the reigning NFL MVP might only play a series if the offense impresses on its opening drive. If it doesn’t, it’s unlikely Newton will be in there past the first quarter.
Can Brandon Wegher Repeat?
Wegher was a fun story last summer when he totaled three preseason touchdowns. While he earned a roster spot, the Panthers never had plans to incorporate him into the offense. But they remain high on Wegher’s potential, and if he shines like he did last preseason, Cameron Artis-Payne’s job may be in jeopardy.
Who Wants No. 5?
Philly Brown’s job hasn’t been as secure as most assume, but he’s made enough plays in camp to feel safe. There’s a logjam behind him, and now it’s up to Brenton Bersin, Kevin Norwood or Damiere Byrd to separate themselves from each other.
Who’s No. 4?
With Rivera implying Scott Simonson has nearly assured himself second season, that sets up a battle between Beau Sandland and Braxton Deaver for what could be the 4th TE on the final 53-man roster. Each has made a number of impressive catches in camp, but the winner may be decided by who’s the better blocker.
Is the David Foucault Experiment Near Its End?
Foucault is going into his third season, just like starting guards Trai Turner and Andrew Norwell. The Canadian’s learning curve was much steeper, but if Foucault struggles during the preseason, the Panthers may pull the plug on the project.
Who is Ryan Delaire?
After the soft-spoken Delaire had made a big splash in his debut against the Bucs last year, the hubbub dried up quickly. A torn labrum didn’t help, but neither did having just one move. The speed rusher now has to show he can sometimes win with power as well.
How Far Along is Vernon Butler?
On some days at camp you forget he’s there. On others, you’ll be amazed a guy that big can move so quickly. In other words, Butler’s a typical first-round pick who’s going to have his ups and downs.
“He’s still a work in progress. It ain’t over,” Rivera said.
“He’s got a long ways to go, and it’s true for any young guy that gets an opportunity to play as much he’s going to play for us. He’ll improve as time goes on and I’m excited to watch him play Thursday night.”
Does Jeremy Cash Have a Chance?
The UDFA out of Duke barely registered during the spring, but he’s starting to become more noticeable. With special teams ace Ben Jacobs currently nursing an ankle injury, a door could be open for Cash.
Can the Rookies Tackle?
James Bradberry, Daryl Worley and Zack Sanchez have exceeded most expectations so far, but none have made a tackle since they left college. The Panthers require good tackling in their secondary, so “The Three Amigos” have a big test ahead.
Will Swayze Waters Stand Out?
Mike Scifres may not punt against the Ravens if his surgically repaired knee is sore, so Waters could have the floor to himself. He’s boomed a handful of punts in camp, but he needs to show consistency when asked to kicked directionally.
