Panthers Promote DE Larry Webster, Waive WR Brenton Bersin

It's hard to see Charles Johnson sitting out Carolina's last trip to the Georgia Dome, but the Panthers have taken out some defensive end insurance.

With Johnson listed as questionable for Sunday games against the Falcons, the Panthers on Saturday promoted Larry Webster from the practice squad. The 6-foot-6, 272-pound end, who was a fourth-round pick of the Lions in 2014, hasn't appeared in a regular-season game.

Johnson popped up on the injury report after he felt tightness in his quad during Thursday's practice. On Friday, coach Ron Rivera said he's "counting on" Johnson facing the Falcons. The Georgia native has notched a sack in four of his past six games against Atlanta.

To make room on the roster, the Panthers waived receiver Brenton Bersin, who was inactive in Weeks 1 and 3. Against the 49ers, he saw five snaps on offense and 15 on special teams.

If and when he clears waivers, the Panthers could add him back to the active roster or their practice squad.
