Recent History of Draft Picks No. 25, No. 57 and No. 89
[vc_column width=”1/1″ fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px”]Of their nine picks in this year’s draft, the Panthers will want at least one-third of their selections to contribute as starters in 2015. Ideally, they’ll find those three in the first two days.[pullquote cite=”Dave Gettleman, before the 2014 draft” type=”right”]“In this day and age, especially in the top three rounds, you’ve got to draft guys that can assimilate very quickly, and that can help us now. Anything you get on the third day is a bonus.”[/pullquote]In his first two drafts as Carolina’s general manager, Dave Gettleman had five picks in the first three rounds: DT Star Lotulelei (1st, 2013), DT Kawann Short (2nd, 2013), WR Kelvin Benjamin (1st, 2014), DE Kony Ealy (2nd, 2014) and G Trai Turner (3rd, 2014). Lotulelei, Benjamin, and Turner earned starting roles their rookie seasons while Short and Ealy each played a significant number of snaps. As we continue looking ahead to the draft, it’s also interesting to look back. With the Panthers currently holding picks at No. 25, No. 57, and No. 89, here is who went off the board at those spots over the past 10 drafts:

NOTES
- Like most spots, No. 25 has offered a mixed bag of successes and failures. Jason Verrett’s rookie year was cut short with a shoulder injury, Tim Tebow spent last year on the SEC Network and Jon Beason made three Pro Bowls with the Panthers.
- Only three of the past 10 players taken at No. 25 are still on the teams that drafted them, and all three are on their rookie contracts.
- Of the 30 picks listed above, just seven remain on their original teams.
- Of the 30 picks listed above, 11 are out of the league.
- While the best player in franchise history wore No. 89, that number has not been kind to the Panthers in the draft. Armanti Edwards, Rashad Butler, and Atiyyah Ellison combined to make zero starts in Carolina.
- Other notable picks at No. 25: DT Chris Hovan (’00, Minnesota), WR Stanley Morgan (’77, New England).
- Other notable picks at No. 57: WR Mark Carrier (’87, Tampa Bay), QB Frank Reich (’85, Buffalo).
- Other notable picks at No. 89: WR Terrell Owens (’96, San Francisco), S Chuck Cecil (’88, Green Bay).
