Shaq Thompson, Former Duke QB Involved in Sunday Morning Car Accident

Former Duke quarterback Anthony Boone is in a Charlotte hospital after a car accident involving Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the incident occurred Sunday at 7:45 a.m. in Weddington, N.C.

Boone and Thompson, who don't know each other, were driving in the opposite direction on Potter Road when Thompson's 2016 Chevrolet SUV crossed the center line in a curve. According to the incident report, when Boone swerved left in his 2004 Lexus SUV to avoid a collision, Thompson swerved right in an attempt to get back into his lane. The two cars then collided head-on.

The Union County Highway Patrol said Thompson told the responding officer he crossed the center line while trying to pick up his cell phone, which he had dropped.

Thompson was wearing a seatbelt and wasn't injured, but he was cited for driving left of center. According to a police official, alcohol was involved, but it wasn't a factor. Thompson passed field sobriety tests and was under the legal limit of .08.

"Shaq informed us he was involved in a traffic accident and we are in the process of gathering more information," Panthers spokesman Ryan Anderson said.

Boone, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt, was transported from the scene and is currently at Carolinas Medical Center. He suffered a broken pelvis and fractured ribs.

A Weddington native, Boone played in 46 games and made 25 starts at Duke. After he went undrafted last spring, he spent some time with the Detroit Lions and the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.
