3 takeaways from the Panthers' 18-6 preseason win over the Steelers.
Receivers Decided?
Because they trust him to fill the role formerly held by Jerricho Cotchery, Brenton Bersin’s job has seemed safe since the start of training camp. That left Damiere Byrd and Kevin Norwood to make arguments for a potential sixth wideout.
Byrd impressed since the spring, and he again flashed Thursday night.
Norwood, who's had an inconsistent preseason, made a terrific leaping catch late in the first half. But that grab may have ended his chances. After landing on his left hip, Norwood was eventually carted to the locker room. If they weren't planning on putting him on the 53-man roster, the Panthers could decide to place Norwood on injured reserve and take another look next year.
Keyarris Garrett isn’t the conversation for a roster spot, but the undrafted rookie dropped jaws with a spectacular 1-handed catch in the corner of the end zone. A questionable offensive pass interference penalty took the touchdown away, but Garrett helped his cause for a spot on the practice squad.
Backup Domination
The Panthers’ backups did a number on Steelers’ backups, especially in the first half. After two quarters, Carolina led 15-2 in first downs, 216-47 in total yardage and 45-18 in total offensive plays.
The Panthers have now won their past four preseason finales, outscoring traditional opponent Pittsburgh, 76-22.
Coach Luke
Is there any doubt what Luke Kuechly’s going to do when his playing days are done?
We are going to have one of the best receiving groups in the NFL.
If Luke is .1 of the coach he is as player, he will be amazing.
