Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Examining the Recent History of the NFL Draft’s 30th Pick

Here's a somewhat meaningless but fun exercise ahead of Thursday's first round of the NFL Draft.

If the Carolina Panthers stay put, it'll be the franchise's first pick at No. 30 and its longest ever wait in the opening round.

For what it's worth, teams have had more hits than misses with the 30th pick over the past five years.

--Last year, the Packers took Damarious Randall, who had a solid rookie season at cornerback after converting from safety.

--In 2014, 49ers rookie Jimmie Ward struggled as a nickel, but he was much better in his second season.

--Alec Ogletree started 36 games for the Rams since 2013, and now he's moving from outside to inside linebacker.

--The 49ers blew this one in 2012. Receiver A.J. Jenkins is out of the league after totaling zero touchdowns in three seasons with the 49ers and Chiefs.

--Muhammad Wilkerson, the Jets' 2011 choice, went to his first Pro Bowl last season. But he's currently less than pleased after getting hit with the franchise tag.

Of the full list of picks taken 30th overall in the first round, Reggie Wayne's name sticks out. Others like Heath Miller and Keith Bulluck had fine careers, but then there are guys like Craig Davis and Andre Johnson, who shouldn't be confused with the 7-time Pro Bowl receiver:

  • 2015, Packers – Damarious Randall  FS  Arizona State
  • 2014, 49ers – Jimmie Ward  DB  Northern Illinois
  • 2013, Rams – Alec Ogletree  ILB  Georgia
  • 2012, 49ers – AJ Jenkins  WR  Illinois
  • 2011, Jets – Muhammed Wilkerson  DE/DT  Temple
  • 2010, Lions – Jahvid Best  RB  California
  • 2009, Titans – Kenny Britt  WR  Rutgers
  • 2008, Jets – Dustin Keller  TE  Purdue
  • 2007, Chargers – Craig Davis  WR  LSU
  • 2006, Colts – Joseph Addai  RB  Louisiana State
  • 2005, Steelers – Heath Miller  TE  Virginia
  • 2004, Lions – Kevin Jones  RB  Virginia Tech
  • 2003, Chargers – Sammy Davis  CB  Texas A&M
  • 2002, Steelers – Kendall Simmons  G  Auburn

  • 1999, Falcons – Patrick Kerney  DE  Virginia
  • 1998, Broncos – Marcus Nash  WR  Tennessee
  • 1997, Packers – Ross Verba  T  Iowa
  • 1996, Redskins – Andre Johnson  T  Penn State
  • 1995, Browns – Craig Powell  LB  Ohio State

If the Panthers stay at No. 62 in the second round, it'll be their first pick in that slot since they took receiver Keary Colbert in 2004.

Last year, the Packers chose cornerback Quinten Rollins with their 62nd overall pick, which is where the Patriots grabbed quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in 2014.
