Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Still a Starter, Mike Remmers Still Just Hoping to Make Roster

Many nervous Carolina Panthers fans have understandably focused their preseason stress on left tackle Michael Oher. But it’s not like there’s a sure thing on the right side, either.Consider this: Incumbent starting right tackle Mike Remmers has had more NFL jobs than regular-season starts.During his first two seasons in the league, he made stops in Denver, Tampa Bay, San Diego, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Charlotte. Then, in November, he became the unlikely glue on the Panthers’ offensive line during the final five games of the regular season. Now he’s moving again. It’s nothing permanent, but as they did in the spring, the Panthers are giving Remmers snaps at center. Last time he played there, he may have had a Spider-Man lunchbox filled with a Lunchables and a Capri Sun.“I played center back in seventh grade,” Remmers said. “It’s really helping me at tackle because you’re looking at the whole line. It’s really helped me out with learning the offense from a new perspective.”With the guards next to you, you don’t feel like you’re out on the island kicking way out there. It’s fun, though. I just want to have a spot on the team, I don’t care where it is.”Anyone who’s bounced around as much as Remmers needs to be able to do multiple things, and that’s especially important on a team that values versatility on the line as much as the Panthers.Remmers won’t replace four-time Pro Bowl center Ryan Kalil anytime soon, but the Panthers are high on fourth-round pick Daryl Williams. Remmers is holding the rookie off for now, but if a change eventually does happen at right tackle, the more positions Remmers can play, the better chance he has to keep his spot on the team.“We’ve had seasons where we’ve had a great starting group and guys get injured, and you get a lot of new faces,” Kalil said. “I was somebody who went down (in 2012), and you had about three new guys one year, so that happens. Your hope is that the next guys up are prepared enough and savvy enough to keep things going and not miss a beat.”

Last year’s line played musical chairs for nearly half the season. When Remmers took his seat at right tackle in Week 13, it was the seventh different rotation in as many games. Since then, Oher’s addition in the offseason has been the only change in the starting lineup. So far in training camp, the Panthers have looked at Nate Chandler and Amini Silatolu as Oher’s backup. It wouldn’t be surprising if one day they try Remmers over there as well. But right now – when he’s not at center – he has his hands full at practice with the company across the table.“[Charles Johnson] is a really good athlete,” Remmers said. “[Facing him] is helping me so much. Every day I learn something new. I know going against him every day will help me get better for the regular season.”With 40 days until Week 1, it looks like Remmers is safely on the roster. But when your list of NFL stops in a short career looks like a cross-country road trip, you don’t plan for much more than making it past the next cuts.“I always keep the mindset of trying to make the team,” Remmers said. “That’s what I’m trying to do right now. It doesn’t matter where I’m at right now; it’s where I am when the regular season starts.”[vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html]
